Farming underground/in mine

Post by jgudge »

Almost completely autonomous villages can exist in the darkness of caves, but what about farming?

Large drawback is that you have to grow your crops outside, so my solution; Greenhouse, or Hothouse as some know it to be.

A separate building that lets you grow crops inside a cave, or just have a farming space above ground, that you can have no fear of getting killed in if you decide to afk.

Advantages:
Grow crops in caves/mines
Possible buff to crop q depending on soil that was imported.
Buff to grow time, allows the crops to grow xx% faster than on normal soil.
Can be fertilized by adding other crops to a bin/compost box.

Disadvantages:
Costs harder to get materials, like glass.
Due to having glass walls, can be more easily broken than regular houses.
Too small to macro a profitable amount in.
Need to import soil to keep soil quantity high enough to let crops proceed to next growth stage.

Other A/D to be added later.

Proceed to discussion.

don't greenhouses still rely on sunlight?

Don't houses in caves rely on some light source?

Yet somehow we can still see in a house that has no way of being lit.

There could be a fix of a new forageable called "Sunbulb" or something, that acts as a socket plant to give the plants the needed sunlight.

I'm all for stretching the barriers of reality for simplicity sake, but farming in caves shouldn't really be possible other than the "I'm lazy and want the game to be this way" factor.

Indoor farming is really encroaching on "Dwarf Fortress" territory, i.e. becomes closer to a Fantasy game than something based on realism.

Besides sunlight, plants also require soil and water. To have greenhouses in caves you'd realistically need to do a whole lot of transporting soil from outside, watering them, lighting the area... It seems more inconvenient than simply farming outside.

It'd be nice to live completely hidden in a cave, but I think it's probably asking a bit too much.

Thumbs up for hallucinogens !

Mushrooms could be very easy to grow but possible only in cellars or caves. For example champignon need specific temperature for good growing (12*-20*Celsius) They doesnt need sunlight or even artifical light. But they need ventilation, because too much carbon dioxide makes them grow bad. They also could give just minor FEP's added to them, to balance out.

Some new objects could be possible like Herbalist Table, or Cheese racks but only for mushroom's growing.

new recipes for cooking and list goes on...
