Re: Game Development: Salem & Haven
I wonder what Paradox's [legal] ownership will consist of once the game is done. It'd be teh suck to see some future game-changing improvement in Salem that cannot be backported to HnH because of copyrights.

But you can patent them. See: 1-Click Ordering.Potjeh wrote:You can't copyright ideas.

You won't be saying that in a week or two when you realize how many abandoned homes there are. A 30 second boat ride south of my village literally bring you to the ghetto. There's abandoned claims everywhere with the occasional newb taking things and raiders patrolling. It reminds me of Detroit.

maybe civilization-based darkness, more mechanics that make night/day interesting (like how fishing changes)Annatar wrote:Will there be knock-on bonuses to H&H from Salem? Perhaps a 3d H&H client down the road?
Salem does sound interesting, but I'm hot for the european feel of H&H, and colonial New England doesn't really fire my imagination.
Actually I wouldn't really care about a 3d client for H&, but still. Is there the possibility of Salem being used as a testbed for ideas for H&H, or would it work the other way around? Or are their features and development being kept completely seperate?

Very true (besides copyright). Hopefully, since Jorb was/is a law student, he will avoid constrictive contracts. Also, it is apparently quite hard to patent game mechanics: http://www.sfweekly.com/2010-09-08/news/farmvillains/Thurrok wrote:I wonder what Paradox's [legal] ownership will consist of once the game is done. Yeah, i know, but i used H&H as an example. This game isn't "technically" released, but still 1000+ ppl play it. That's all i was saying.halloween wrote:Jgudge..I was referring to salem when I said that..I do beleave we all know what state H&H is in..

So it's Haven in a new pair of shoes... lol. Also... Eww... Europeans making a game about my beloved land!
One more thing! This game is extremely grind oriented, with long periods of drawn out dullness and has no end game to speak of, except for harassing those weaker than you (but, player interaction, trade, blah blah blah... no lol). I don't see it becoming a major success. Unless they are marketing it for the Koreans and thats why they're going for cutesy animal crossing graphics. <- lol
OK, that is all. Good luck and have fun you peoples!

Everyone loves Europeans, they're so cuddly.Bumble wrote:Eww... Europeans making a game about my beloved land!
Grind is god, i do agree that there is alot of grind, but if you get a settlement going, and a group of ppl together, it can be alot of fun. Nothing like a person trying to raid you to get the adrenaline going, let me tell you that.Bumble wrote: One more thing! Haven or Salem, b/c haven pop = 1600+ at peak time, that not including accounts generated, and characters active. Also not including active accounts. This is just the number of people playing at that time.Bumble wrote: I don't see it becoming a major success.
Yay, racism is funny.Bumble wrote:Unless they are marketing it for the Koreans and thats why they're going for cutesy animal crossing graphics. <- lol
Also, you can't laugh at your own statement. I won't allow it.
