I did something similar in World 3 with my firmly fortified excesses, just put up a barter stand outside the gate and offered baked goods for low quality clay. (Mainly to repair the huge amounts of brick-wall the abandoned settlement had...)

Turns out some people feel bad about taking stuff for free.
And the ones who don't, well, obviously have no inclination not to take the crate as well.

That's actually a good idea. Rather than a crate, just build a barter stand at the edge of your claimed land so no one can steal from it or claim it themselves. Then set the price to something like stones, branches, or q10+ clay in exchange for food. This way no one can steal it from you and you can distribute to the poor without worry.

So I started playing not to long ago, but even on my own I quickly establish a nice little settlement with a fully covered claim.

Anyways I started eventually growing more food then I needed so I decided to leave a crate full of food just outside my border on a nice stone paved floor for any starving passerby.
I even put a Runestone adjacent to the crate basically saying "Free food! Don't take the crate please!"

I log on after waking up and the crate is gone....









I hope everyone who can't fend for themselves around my plot starves

Crates on claims don't decay though. I assumed you knew this and therefore assumed your "outside" comment meant outside your claim. Sorry for assuming you were smarter than you actually are.

You'll get used to it. Everyone is an ass and/or troll, including the mods. Nobody likes nice guys in this game, either, which is sad. I did the exact same thing you did a while back and got the same result. Now though, I just plant free farms for people for starter seeds.
