I read the first post, thought OP had some sense and then read the rest of the first page and quickly found out I was wrong.
Only problem I see long distance with this is that since after you 'find' everything LP is basically spent on how much attention you have and what you're studying, the game quickly becomes about who has been the best for the longest. What are the chances of someone joining 2 months into the game ever reaching the LP of a person who started at launch?
An example, let's say all discoveries total to 50k LP, and with the best curiosities you can get 100k LP/day with minimal time investment (I assume however that there will be shorter but more LP-worth discoveries to attempt to balance this).
A person who joins on Day1 will have by Day30: 50k + (100kx30) = 3.05m LP
A person who joins on Day 15 will have by Day 30: 50k + (100kx50) = 1.55m LP
He will never catch up to the Day 1 person.
What I honestly want to see is for FEPs to help more, my play style interests have changed since W3 greatly and making food is where it's at for me personally, but FEPs matter so little that it still seems rather pointless.

Re: Thoughtful Criticism For The New LP System
How do I get friends to play now? I billed this game as not having to grind. You had to a little bit at the start when you made some axes to buy lumberjacking and stuff, but then all the LP came from just doing what you had do. Now what, I tell them they have to chase ladybugs to level up?
By the way, this is like EVE Online now. You get skill points over time. At least in EVE you just pick one instead of having to build a cone cow all the time.

Re: Thoughtful Criticism For The New LP System
You don't have to go chasing ladybugs and picking dandelions, you still get LP for building stuff. Yeah, you don't get LP for hitting the build button, but you get curiosities for preparing the materials. Like shavings from making boards, or roots from pulling stumps. For paving, you get cat gold from chipping rocks. Those are actually some of the best low tier curiosities, but they're rarer than foragables and stuff so it balances out. Sure, we're not in an ideal world, so some jobs may give more LP than others, but that can easily be fixed by adjusting the LP payouts of different curiosities.
Now, the really important part of the system: you can't have two curiosities of the same kind in use at once. This is basically an implementation of that suggestion to limit daily LP for individual activities (like max 5000LP a day for buckets, etc). However, this is a much more elegant implementation. In the original version, every character would be forced to switch between activities during a play session. Here, however, you can do one thing the whole time and get multiple curiosities of the same kind here. But your other village members can do other jobs that give other curiosities, and then you can just swap your stocks now and then so everyone has a variety of curiosities to use. Hermits can still focus on just one job, too, if they have trade partners. If not, well, their LP gain rate will be slower than other people's. But I don't think that's a bad thing. H&H is an MMO, and player interaction needs to be heavily encouraged to make for a more interesting world.
Also, DoG has a very good point, but that was a problem even before. IMO we need equipment based skill caps to make sure nobody becomes untouchable.

When you make an entire house and don't get a mystical wood shaving to ponder upon under a tree like you're Buddhist, they're a bit too rare.

Well yeah, the drop rates may need adjusting too. But just because some tweaks are needed, which is to be expected with a completely new system, doesn't mean that the core mechanics aren't sound.

I took a pine cone, put four branches on it so it would appear as a cow, and pondered the truths of the universe. There's suspension of disbelief, and there's silly.
And why not drop a wood shaving every time, anyway? How many curiosities you can have at a time is limited anyway.

No more silly than getting nimble from eating eel.
And if you had virtually limitless curiosities you'd have virtually limitless number of combat alts.

Well, we certainly cannot have silly things in our fantasy game based on eating food to grow stronger.Versak wrote:I took a pine cone, put four branches on it so it would appear as a cow, and pondered the truths of the universe. There's suspension of disbelief, and there's silly.

Not trying to defend him, but that's pretty realistic.Jackard wrote:Well, we certainly cannot have silly things in our fantasy game based on eating food to grow stronger.Versak wrote:I took a pine cone, put four branches on it so it would appear as a cow, and pondered the truths of the universe. Re: Thoughtful Criticism For The New LP System
I read first post, all of it.
I'm a bit disappointed.
There is a better way to go about it you know.
Don't limit LP gains. This system is to reward casual players who can't submit 50 hours a week towards playing H&H.
I agree it hurts the hardcores, who have to WAIT to do things.
but I propose, the Duality system.
You know the Personal Beliefs System?
Well there's two ways to go about this.
First way, Integrated LP systems.
-Basically, have it so that LP can be gained through labors AND curiosities. Tweak it a bit so that curiosities are still a good gain.
Second way, Personal Beliefs Slider
-Have it so that you can slide a slider to either A; Get more LP through labor, or B; Get more LP through Curiosities.
Maybe like Thinker and Hardworker?
