There are different kinds of lag. The thickets definitely create a lot of graphical lag for me Enough to crash me if I've got X-ray on.

Thickets do cause an excessive amount of lag, but there really is no way to get rid of that without just removing a ton of the sprites, which kind of kills the benefits that houses in a thicket give (being hidden). If the game lags too much, just use Enders client and hide flavor objects, that probably does the trick

Unfortunatly, it does not.
Houses in a thicket are not hidden by the way, because most people use Ender's client anyways.

Jungles/Thickets don't bother me because of lag. I just wish they had unique resources and/or critters for me to consume or maim me.

Also some sort of unique mushroom or plant with thorns would be cool.
