Re: May, 1. Comrades, let's celebrate!
You must not have read the Haymarket Riot article to which you linked. The police started shooting after they got a bomb thrown at them. And this is supposed to be commemorated for the horrible injustices made by the police (read: the representatives of the oppressing bourgeois society) upon the poor, peaceful working class masses.Markoff_Chaney wrote:The Chicago Haymarket Riot, which May Day commemorates, proved that people of all economic classes must have the right of free association in a democratic society.
For the record, I also denounce the implication that a "democratic society" is something desirable and conclude, in advance, that it is precisely this "democratic society" which leads to the injustices to which you linked.

Re: May, 1. Comrades, let's celebrate!
The violence erupted after the police moved to disperse the crowd. The police were in the wrong to move against a protest that was, up until that point, peaceful. The protesters' later use of violence should not be used to justify the police officers' own injustices. Two wrongs don't make a right.loftar wrote: You must not have read the Haymarket Riot article to which you linked. The police started shooting after they got a bomb thrown at them.
The initial motivation for the protest was, incidentally, an unprovoked police attack on a group of striking workers.

Dunno about where you live, but over here everyone throws a barbecue on first of May, so it's a pretty good holiday.
