This isn't a bug. It's a feature. By properly using this feature, you can prevent anyone from successfully infiltrating your camp from underground. Next thing you know, people will be demanding to come out of their house on the opposite side of the building than the door is.
Honestly, I'd rather have it like the cellars where you can't even exit if something is blocking it (such as the palisade in this case).
