AFAIK you need charcoal for a smelter, and the lowest charcoal q you'd be able to get is 3 (a block of q1 wood in a q10 kiln fired with q1 wood = 13/4 = 3). Your stone would then come out as q8 (q10 ore and smelter, q3 charcoal = 33/4 = 8), so that with one hell of a lot of work you could get a q2 axe (8+1/2/2 = 2).

Yes, yes it would, but you'd need to use the q5 kiln to make another 45 q4 bricks out of more grey clay, and use the resulting q4 smelter with some oh no hey wait, umm, maybe not?

so with a q5 kiln you could make q2 charcoal
so you could use that to make q3 bricks from q5 grey clay
so you're still going to end up with q6 stones from the smelter, I think (10+10+3+2 = 25, 25/4 = 6)
and so won't be able to go below q2 axes.
