Ok so first off i am all about PvP in games and I think that PvP in this game could be fun and rewarding but here is what is not fun and rewarding
last night my settlement was attacked by a much higher level player. he killed all of my friends and killed one of my alts. Now as for me I don't care to much. he did very little damage to me, no property damage and killed an alt with barely even 20k lp. and besides that the alt was standing around outside his house while I was on my main going foraging so after all I DID set myself up for it.
However with that said those other players had just started playing the game that day. Now they hate the game and have sworn to never play it again.
Honestly if you want a successful game you need to stop people from raping noobs simply because they can it will make players stop playing and when those people tell others what happened it will run people off from ever trying the game.
after all how can this be considered an MMO if every 10 seconds the top 50 most powerful players are killing everyone so often that no one else wants to play the game.....
sounds to me like those people will have an enjoyable experience right up until the servers get taken down due to a lack of players...
think about it - you, as a dev team, want to make money and improve the servers as well maybe make some money for other things through donations then think about limiting how and when PvP can and does occur. and honestly if the 50 griefers don't like it and you manage to create a game that has 50000 players or more then those 50 players can go back to griefing in minecraft and let you go back to developing a successful and fun indie game

This game was at one point run from jorbs apartment... i really doubt it would get taken down due to lack of players, probably taken back to his apartment if anything >.>

at the point that the servers become to costly or even dare I say a burden on the op...yeh they do get taken down...... I used to "run servers out of my apartment"bmjclark wrote:http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=17900

RE: the link something to consider "why do anything if you aren't going to do it big, and make it a smash hit?"
A) how does one measure the success of a game? is it because it does exactly what the dev wants it to do, regardless of what the frothing masses think? or is it because it becomes popular and makes the dev rich beyond all measure (IE minecraft) and how does one decide which of these two extremes to go toward...usually the wise dev takes the middle ground giving enough of both to make them happy in their product while at the same time making the product appealing to the frothing masses.
Much like Rome to achieve the latter goal is to appease the people. You give the people what they want and they will love you for it. You fail to give them what they want and you are destined for mediocrity or worse sublimation. No one like to be 3rd place and those who fail at that come in last which is to say those devs and games are no longer around. so what does that leave you?
Absolute and utter domination of the market. By meeting the middle ground giving the players enough to win them over and in the process not giving up so much that the dev becomes unsatisfied with the end result is the means to achieving greatness in the business
I am not a new hat in this arena, I have been helping dev games for a long time as well as admining online games for nearly as long. As much as I hate to admit it without the people's adulation you have nothing but a failed side project that could have been great but was doomed to fail because it was too heavy handed in its approach. Indie games are not the only ones who suffer from heavy handed devs MANY great AAA games never even made it to the store shelf due to this reason.
B) solutions can and do present themselves
1) Maintain several worlds one for the hard core players and one for more casual players. Now I am not saying give the carebears free lease to never experience PvP no. I am saying give noobs a chance to get on their feet before handing out a rape hat to every new person you see.
2) give people a bit more time before they can be raped by a mega-player
C) RE: one of the points in the post. who plays a game to experience the joys and sorrows of real life? Is the vapidity of the Sims really that appealing to people? Your average gamer wants to escape reality not live it. How many succesful MMOs emulate real life...not a single one...maybe there is a reason for that.
D) so worst case scenario: he does move the server back to his apartment - in defeat - good job on taking last place (see above) but congratulations you have just learned the capital lesson of game development which is illustrated by this very simple question... "You just wasted a huge amount of time, effort and money and what did you get for it?"
The answer is:

Every newbie sugggests this. If you can't put up with how mean this community is, we don't need people like you. Seriously just go to another game man. Unfortunately, we don't hold your hands here. Not Even the developers who is MIA apparently. So I speak for just about everyone when I say we don't want care bears.maintain several worlds one for the hard core players and one for more casual players. Now I am not saying give the carebears free lease to never experience PvP no. I am saying give noobs a chance to get on their feet before handing out a rape hat to every new person you see.

Re: Stop the griefing
If you honestly think this game is ever going to be mainstream with permadeath i don't think there's much point in arguing with you. You know why games like wow (or any of the wow clones out there) have made it? Because it's forgiving as all hell. You die? No problem, you're alive again, nothing lost. The game is supposed to be unforgiving and your supposed to be in just as much danger as a noob. It's the way it always has been, and likely the way it always will be. This game will likely never have a massive player base, and i personally am quite ok with that. I'm pretty sure jorb and loftar have likely made their peace with that too, otherwise they would remove permadeath all together.
