I imagine that initial alpha testers will have invitations sent to them and subsequent testers, as the group becomes more broad, will need to apply. Just a guess though.

Alpha Testing (Currently the game is in Pre-Alpha and we'll need an elite handful of players with proven experience in similar kinds of MMORPG's to start this withus) - This will begin as soon as we reach Alpha which is trending towards the end of September. It'll begin with a very small hand picked group and then grow to size(s) that make sense for testing and participation.

Beta Testing (This will be open to a much larger group with all those that were in Alpha Testing being grandfathered in) - This will start around the beginning of 2012 or when Alpha development is done and the game is ready for Beta Testing.

Open Beta (This will be as it sounds, open to everyone by registering) This will happen once the game is in a state to handle a much larger player base.

As much as I'm sure that everyone who's posted on this topic wants to get in to alpha, I agree with the decision to allow only the experienced players in. Considering I've only joined H&H late in W3, that probably means I won't be asked to join, but I'm ok with that. I'd much prefer to have the people who find the exploits to be playing instead of letting the game server become flooded with 700 newbs who have no blinking idea what they're doing. I think that it'll probably be pushed faster into beta that way, which is good for all of us.

From the latest posts by the Salem team it looks like most H&H players will be allowed to join the close beta circa early 2012 and that seems good enough for me... Although it might interfere with the release of Diablo III, I wonder which I would play more?

Not likely unless you provide something to the development team proving you deserve it. Alpha and early beta testing is a privilege (or a job depending on how you look at it) for those that know how to do software testing and raking things over with a fine-tooth comb. Either J&L have a short list of people they've already decided to invite or they have a short list of people they'll take recommendations from for extra testers. Maybe they'll post a request for applications a week or so before starting the testing. Don't hold your breath, though.
