I used search, didn't see anything like this, sorry if I missed it.
I think palisades and brick walls(though I've never seen this problem with bw) should only be buildable on claims. I walk/boat around alot and see huge palisades with tiny little claims either in the middle or on the gate, I've seen 1 palisade thats a bit larger than 1 and a half grids wide and almost 2 grids high on the minimap, with a claim of about 15 by 20 covering the gate. maybe its just me but I think its absurd.
this does 3 things that I see as improvements to the game:
1)stops noobs from starting and being locked in some huge palisade unable to actually play the game(yes it happens).
2)stops the huge palisades from blocking off an area with good resources when it can't be claimed.
3)stops people from being able to spawn inside someone's walls to grief them.

Re: Palisades Only on Claims
Hrm. Actually not a terrible idea. I understand that people will complain about security and they're rightfully doing so, as without large walls you're subject to randomly be sniped but at the same time I think it would better promote fellowship if you were encouraged to be in a village and work towards it to have and maintain large walls than if you can simply do something to this extent on your own.
However, this idea just doesn't work if you're dealing with personal claims as, if there are two personal claims in an area, they can never share a wall. There will always be at least a 5 tile gap in the wall that cannot be filled. So while it promotes larger scale fellowship, it really hurts smaller groups.

Re: Palisades Only on Claims
hadn't really thought much on small groups with multiple personal claims...I think the simple compromise would be to limit how far from a claim you can build a wall. 3 tiles from a claim means you'll meet in the middle of those 2 claims, but still prevents huge(grid sized) palisades with tiny claims.TeckXKnight wrote:However, this idea just doesn't work if you're dealing with personal claims as, if there are two personal claims in an area, they can never share a wall. though that could cause the problem of 4 long claims in a box pattern to build walls without a claim in the middle...

Re: Palisades Only on Claims
Palisades are easy to build and easy (relatively) to destroy. They also decay relatively rapidly compared to other more permanent structures. Myself, even as a hermit, like a 120x120 plot of land. I'm going to get my claim that large anyway (or get a village idol down first). However, if I were to wait until I had the LP for that size of claim (144000) in the early game along with trying to get exploration, UA, MM, etc up, all kinds of ugly things could happen. Granted, it's only a few days of hard grinding, but I think it's an unnecessary restriction.
But... why stop at Palisades only? Why not require a brick wall to be built on a claim?

Re: Palisades Only on Claims
I understand upgrading every few days could be a hassle, but its more of a hassle to have to build a ram to destroy every palisade thats pretty much empty. I'm not destroying them yet, but as I expand my village I see a few that will definitely be going(the huge 1 I mentioned is actually on a pretty good soil node that I use occasionally and the owner hasn't been on in a few weeks). if you're actually going to build that big and you're getting there within a reasonable amount of time you could hold off on sealing a cornerpost at the edge of your land(no worries of griefers if they can't build it off the claim) then go on from there.
its crazy seeing all these palisades that take up a grid or more and have a claim that isn't even worth mentioning...even crazier when you see them every day and they aren't even trying to claim it all since it doesn't matter. once you've walled it in, claimed or not as long as you keep it repaired it ruins it for anyone else in the area.
as for your second point:

first sentence of my original post includes brickwalls...ImAwesome wrote:I think palisades and brick walls(though I've never seen this problem with bw) should only be buildable on claims.

Re: Palisades Only on Claims
Claims, permissions, village claims and all that need a thorough rework anyway. Then such a thing might be possible. If it is still needed after major updates on siege systems (Which it probably won't be. With shell defense and such even weak hearthlings could probably bash a longwall construction by hand if I got JLos concept right) then this would be a good idea to prevent the horrible longwalling of rams.TeckXKnight wrote:However, this idea just doesn't work if you're dealing with personal claims as, if there are two personal claims in an area, they can never share a wall. I didn't even consider that it would prevent long walling. Good.

Re: Palisades Only on Claims
I agree its nice being able to do whatever you want most of the time in a game...but when you see a palisade that huge and noone is using it(except the noob who got stuck in there last week, yes I talked to her it was a noob that had just started playing) you really have to wonder whats up with stuff like that.
I mean if you're able to build them only on a claim it solves so many problems, and the only serious problem it causes is that it takes a tad bit of your design freedom away til you've claimed enough...and really who doesn't have thier claim atleast the size they're making thier palisade in a few days(if that long)?
