So, for reasons that do not need exploring at this time, I was standing outside a palisade, carrying the key. And some words appeared in the area chat:
???: Hi
Me: hello
???: from?
Me: england. you?
??? Poland
and then I lagged out, which is hardly a novel experience for me, but somewhat rude when engaged in conversation, so I logged back in with all possible speed. It was not a particularly nice feeling when, on being faced with a black 'Loading...' screen I heard a metallic zinging sort of noise, as if a sword was being wielded in the vicinity, and eventually discovered myself in combat with some guy in a bear cape. (Now that I think about it, I wasn't in combat when I lagged out, and I'm pretty sure I didn't get the option to log back in at my hearth fire, so presumably I spent some time involuntarily afk there, and that's when Mr ??? started waving the sword around. This is really Not A Good Thing. I totally accept the risk of being murdered if I'm standing right there, but it seems to me that if I can't see me then nobody else should be able to either). A combination of lag and my lack of combat skills left me trying and failing to do much of anything, so I said 'kurwa', that being the most appropriate piece of my minimal Polish, and failed to even punch him before the guy finally managed to knock me out and steal my key and one decent curio.
As I didn't really have anything to lose, when I came round I didn't log out, but stood outside my palisade and talked while the guy went round looking through my stuff and stealing my leather. The bit I'd like a translation of is
???: tez bylem poczatkujacy to tez mi tak zrobili nie raz = I have no idea at all
???: zabil bym cie ale powiedziales kurwa = [zabijać = to kill] ? ? but [powiedzieć = to say] kurwa
- does that second line translate something like 'I was going to kill you but you said [a word in Polish]'?
Then he gave me my key back and I said thanks (is there any way to use special characters in chat? my spelling is bad enough even when I have access to the whole alphabet, so I'd like to be able to use ę etc when they belong). And then he warned me about a murderer in the area (!) and left, apparently on the trail of said murderer.

as an experienced raider i can tell you with some confidence that i dont think this dude wanted to leave murder scents, as he is likely a coward. murder scents last 9d8h compared to theft/battery (only 2d16h) leaving a smaller window for rangers to track him

That doesn't explain why he gave back him his keys.Deadlift_pro wrote:as an experienced raider i can tell you with some confidence that i dont think this dude wanted to leave murder scents, as he is likely a coward. murder scents last 9d8h compared to theft/battery (only 2d16h) leaving a smaller window for rangers to track him

When I was a newbie they did the same to me few times.min_the_fair wrote: ???: tez bylem poczatkujacy to tez mi tak zrobili nie raz = I have no idea at all

I would kill you but you said 'kurwa'
Probably he did a copy of your key and he will come back when you will be more developed. Why to kill if you can get profit without any risk later? I suggest new gates.

Re: Polish translation request/Did an insult save my life?
redbanner, thanks for the autotranslation, it still doesn't make much sense but it's better than I was getting - "Theses so as it have made case (together; time) theses so me not poczatkujacy" for the first line.
Deadlift pro, I did consider that - I don't have much con or good armour, and it took a while for him to KO me as well, so maybe he's just not a great fighter. My palisade is in pretty much an ideal place to murder someone though, being both unmapped and a long way from a river.
Koru, thanks for the translation and advice. The reason I was outside in the first place is that I was making a new section of palisade, so I think I'll move everything valuable (four more pieces of leather! and a q30 bone saw, I know you're all jealous....) in there straight away.
(Not that anyone cares, but mostly I live in a brickwalled village and don't have anything to do with keys. This is just a side project. honestly. )

If you don't have much in the way of valuables, maybe lock the place up, and move out. He knows you're easy prey now, and will come back at a later date.

and probably also has a copy of your key. At the very least, you need to bash down your gate and replace it.
