Re: Mapmaker, Mapmaker, make me a Mapmaker!
Map data is a potential pit of despair from an implementational standpoint. As is the maps are basically sent as .png files and then simply rendered client side. My guesstimate would be that there would be massive transfer issues if the clients sent a basically arbitrary number of requests for arbitrarily large maps at local map resolution. I suppose one idea could be to send raw data instead of rendered images, and then implement the map rendering client side, but the issue, I'd wager, would still be there. One could probably also extract the map handling from the main game server, and handle it with a dedicated server, a problem there is that a dedicated server would still have to confirm with game data that the client in question is actually allowed to see the map requested. But all of that is of course on loftar's table.
At present, I have to recommend using 3rd party software, sadly.
The windows are also not resizable because only a window that could theoretically display an arbitrary amount of information has any need for that kind of functionality. Most of ours, all the critical ones, display a fixed amount of information.

it would still be fairly simple, i would think, to accomplish several of the goal in the OP, such as naming the map, making a book of maps, and possibly labeling points on the map.

Oh yeah, no doubt about that. It just feels a bit wasteful to polish if the proper foundation isn't laid.

It would be helpful if there were a function to send the map's image to the clipboard. This would save me the time I have to spend on cropping print screen images, and would really be as good as I would need. It's just so much easier to deal with the maps out of game.

bump for maps aiding travel now that everyone is spread so far out. also gives purpose to region maps since you dont have to carry a books worth of local maps to receive the benefit
perhaps each time maps are used in this way, their quality decreases

Re: Mapmaker, Mapmaker, make me a Mapmaker!
It occurs to me that the mapping process should become automatic. Perhaps as a toggle.
All maps should be region maps and local maps should be accessible within region maps.
I think these things are necessary because as it has been pointed out the use of cartography has to have in game benefits to make the process worthwhile. Imho it's far more cumbersome to do mapping as it stands because of the need to carry so many damn supplies. This might be less relevant if inventory and capacity is increased.

would it fix any implementation problems if the map didn't display trees and buildings but just land? type (grass, forest water etc).
real life maps dont show buildings and trees anyways.
