That is certainly doable. Coins really haven't had a chance to value themselves other than trying to base it on the underlying metal. So only by trading can we work out what they are really 'worth.'
True.
Well, if anyone is wanting CI coins, just tell me. I am willing to buy bread.

Not real sure what the big deal is, I don't have time to do metalworking in addition to what I actually enjoy doing, so I will certainly trade for bars or coins.

I don't keep bread in stock, but its only a matter of baking some up. Let me know what you're after and we can work something out.

Hmm actually scrap that order. Most of my towns people are not playing this weekend for some reason. There will be not much mining. And if any it will be for steel.

However:
we roughly estimate the price of a product by time spent and effort to make.

For example. A steel bar goes for 3500 iron coins as we estimate it takes 58 hours to make with constant care.
Leather takes next to no effort (hides are considered a by product of hunting). Only filling tubs costs a minute or so (per 10 tubs). So we value that at about roughly the same or a little less than a cast iron bar (made with tick exploit). So between roughly 50 and 100 iron coins. (100 for example for a single piece, 50 for bulk).

Clayshire and Laketown settled on our steel price (and alike) but we still need to find out the price in coins for other stuff. Which turns out to be quite difficult as miners say cast isn't that hard to get while tanners say leather is easy to get. Maybe we should use a system to value on Products made per minute. Tanning takes time to finish and you could argue hunting is part of it. Mining takes time to do but smelting doesn't take that long, but you do need tea.

Fixed costs are always hard to do, especially in a barter system. Sure, rules of thumb are nice, but no system other than an order entry/board of trade would come close to actually realizing prices at any given time.

Things certainly have a time value to them, but that won't account the simple fact that I WANT something alot more than something else and will pay a premium or am flooded with other goods that I want to dump & therefore devalue. Steel might be considered the most expensive, time-consuming item in the game, but I currently have absolutely no need for it (other than to trade it away), so its value to me is next to naught (remember it has to be stored, also, and my inventory space is precious). In the end, it truly is up to the individual trade.

Plus, an industry-spec'd miner can get ore more easily than a nature-spec'd farmer, but then the farmer could make tea more efficiently, which should mitigate some of the pricing variances.

I mean, I gave Vattic such a great deal, I had to indenture all nine of my children. ;) But, he also made the trip to me and hinted at making future trades - all things I would take into consideration when pricing a load of goods.

Yep.

What is the exchange rate for your steel?

I'd expect the chest will be worth vastly more than a chest worth of bread... If you're really after bulk bread, 4 straw baskets full would probably be better value for you {although chests are awesome, so I don't fault you for trying to get one on the cheap ;) }

I don't trade containers unless they're straw baskets (practically free for me). The only time I'd trade a chest (for ease of transport) is if I was receiving one in return.

But, I do have a basket of bread in stock, so let me know what you have to trade (my most wanted items are in my sig).
