How do I mine a complete area without getting killed?

How do I mine a complete area without getting killed?

I've seen underground villages having no mine supports and large areas mined out. How is that even possible without dying? Can the rock collapsing be avoided? I know they can be destroyed.

What those images don't tell you are the Alts that died while knocking out the support posts.
