I personally don't see deer during the day often, usually find them at night. But eh, nothing's been said by jorb/loftar far as I know.
It's all about as factual as bigfoot and voodoo charms. Some people will believe anything. Nobody has yet done a statistical analysis of this and until they do, they might as well be blowing smoke.

damage is figured as a multiplier * sqrt (q / 10), so it's a gradual increase that gets slower as quality goes higher. The same is true for calculating FEP points, etc.

I'm curious if anyone has a good tracking guide or some kind of tips when it comes to tracking a perpetrator.
Say I already have theft scents found - how do I go about actually tracking down the thief?
I can see the right-click functions already, but I'm confused on how they work. I understand force-summoning, however.
I don't see any kind of path lit up when I track a scent. I'm relatively new to the game, but I understand most things pretty damn well.
Also, if I end up killing my thief, when found, does that, too, leave scents? Or is it simply a "vengeance kill" of sorts and not considered murder?

When tracking a perpetrator or hearthfire, it will give you the direction of the targer. It will tell you if the perpetrator is logged off or dead or if they have no hearthfire.

Killing the thief will still leave scents since the game does not distinguish morality.

I see...So I track perp / stolen goods and I get an arrow direction? Or does the "messages" box tell me the direction?
I already used one and saw "The perpetrator is not logged in." But I didn't notice any specified direction to, say, his hearth.

The indication is at point from your character towards the direction of what you are tracking.

Will bears appear more often after a certain per*exp has been reached? I've been looking for bear for days and can't find a single one.
