Re: CAVEAT EMPTOR: Regarding Real Money Transactions
Then why word your post in a such a way that is completely misleading and factually incorrect? There is, 1000%, nothing illegal about selling game account or item for real world money. At all. Ever. The fact that you worded your post to ensue this makes you either seem like you have no idea what you're talking about, or you're just assuming that we're too naive to know any better.jorb wrote:As is your mother. The point is one of legality, not philosophy. I understand perfectly well that ingame crap can and will be accorded prices in terms of real world money regardless of what rules I may make about it. The point that the transaction will not enjoy the protection of law is very real.cobaltjones wrote:Econ 101 fail. This has nothing to do with real world laws or economics. You, of all people, I would have figured would have a clue about this. It's your game and you can make up whatever rules you wish, but please don't try and act like this has anything to do with the legality of "selling game data". It's pretty pathetic actually.

Who said it was illegal? What I said is that such a transaction will not enjoy the legal protection that real world contracts otherwise enjoy. EDIT: As to whether it would be considered illegal as such is a very open question. You could make a very strong case that a person engaging in that kind of behavior is engaging in fraud, as he is trying to sell something to which he does not enjoy any legal title. If I still had the ambition to become a lawyer I would actually be very interested to have a case like that or similar go to court, because I think it could probably go very far up the legal food chain. Unfortunately the sums involved are much too small to go to court over, but from a theoretical standpoint I think it could be a lot of fun, and I'm fairly certain that there aren't many precedents.
Then again fraud would make it a criminal case and not a civil case, but you could obviously still sue for damages suffered and blablabla.

i think he means is that you can indeed talk to player a and buy player a's clay for 10 dollars. but as soon as he finds out, you and player A will be forum banned and the clay you bought as well as possibly your entire place and character will be nuked(and most likely Player A's char and stuff as well)cobaltjones wrote:Then why word your post in a such a way that is completely misleading and factually incorrect? This reeks of moral scare tactics. RMT is in no way "buying or selling things that you do not own". There is absolutely, positively, no legal issues or repercussions associated with the action. If you don't want to allow RMT then by all means, be my guest. Post a topic that says "We're the fucking bosses and we don't want to allow this. Deal with it."jorb wrote:Please be aware that you cannot legally buy or sell things that you do not own. Since we own all game data, you cannot buy and sell such things with the expectation that the transaction will be considered legal and valid by us, or by any worldly authority.
But to word your announcement in such a way that hints at criminal implications really makes you look foolish. You don't have to justify your decision to anybody, but to try and justify it with the WRONG information is extremely imprudent. You're not fooling anyone.
Also,
Very tactful discussion there. You should have a bright future in politics.jorb wrote:Moron.
