And the OP is all about changing those rules to something more reasonable. So really, I see no reason to get stuck on what the devs did or didn't intend.

Well, I think the intentions are good, the implementation isn't. I believe it is possible to continue to allow exploration mining without these little "flaws" and "workarounds". To me, it sounds like the OP just wants to get rid of it all together.

A nice little suggestion that was brought up back in the day was an el cheapo support that only costs a couple of blocks and just supports a short straight line rather than a radius.

exploration mining is something that has to be done and without zig zag that would just be awful
