Just calling this out, if i am wrong u are allowed to correct me.
When the server starts recieving (massive) lagg spikes isnt that noticiable in the server console ?
Solution 1 : so my idea = if u make a program that tracks the lagg spikes that keeps increasing it will reboot it self ? with ofcourse a 5 minute warning message to the players ? <---- dont know if this can be made ? but it will prevent lagg getting worse, and if there is no one to restart the server manualy, people might experience lagg for a long period of time.
Solution 2 : Everyday at the same time a automatic downtime for 5-10 to perform tests on the server and an reboot so the lagg is gone ? cause mostly it takes a few days for the lagg to become worse. so if there is een reboot everyday the lagg will be gone :S in my sight of view. * i know it depends on who is online and if there has been spamming with items but i think this would solve allot and make the server more stable if there is an automatic test everyday *
u are allowed to correct me, but this is how i think about it and i only want to help.
* Dont pay attention to my english *

Re: Automatic server rebooter suggestions
i know loftar wouldnt like either of those because 1) he wants to manually reboot 2) he wouldnt want to make this a daily chore.

Re: Automatic server rebooter suggestions
but thats the idea to make an program do it automaticly... + a well writen program can do this just fine...
so that loftar doesnt have to reboot anymore.. unless he adds an update.

Re: Automatic server rebooter suggestions
I agree with OP, would be awesome to have such things. A lot of games uses server restarts in practice to clean up data and reduce lag spikes.
On other hand I think devs should "cure" the source of the problem instead of "patching" it. Getting better disk array would probably solve problems or maybe other server with better disks and hosting forums on another server instead on game server. If the fault of lag spikes is bad game design then we are already screwed ass they don't have time to fix that as they work on Salem.
Good question on place would be: what do we need to get rid of lag? Better hardware, better software, better server admin or better game program design?
If we need better server we can go with 1$ donation per month from each of us or per account. I gladly pay it to play normally.

Re: Automatic server rebooter suggestions
From what I've read and heard:
- lags are not server (HW) issue
- "curing" the code is possible but there's no time to do it
- there already is an idea how to rework lot of the stuff from the ground
And I've also read an opinion regarding Loftar being the cause of the recent lags thanks to his "tweaking" ^^
I know he crashed the server few days ago but I'm not sure what's going on right now as I'm either bad at searching or he just don't want us knowing.

he was trying to debugg and something crashed the server while he was at it.Leny-m wrote:I know he crashed the server few days ago but I'm not sure what's going on right now as I'm either bad at searching or he just don't want us knowing.
he is still looking for the cause, when he finds time, that is.

Re: Automatic server rebooter suggestions
As I heard it is disk performance problem on server. Server uses RAID1 array to backup all data and main bottleneck is here. Hope lofty comes and tell us more, maybe he needs some help configuring array.Leny-m wrote:From what I've read and heard:

I should hope he lets us help him, but they don't usually accept help.Nummy wrote:As I heard it is disk performance problem on server. Jackard: Koya only raises the lynx so he can molest it later
Koya: What means "molest" ? Translator cannot translate it or do it with no logics...
"And no im not native to english, I was born in the usa." - A very bad troll.

Re: Automatic server rebooter suggestions
Well, loftar has asked for help in the past with optimizing the OpenGL and rendering optimization, but nobody has seemed willing or able to help with that. Why should he ask for help with something that hasn't been made public?aso11 wrote:I should hope he lets us help him, but they don't usually accept help.
