Couple questions about mining.
1) What's a reasonable amount of strength for your first try in a cave?
2) Is there much variation on a given level of hardness?
New alt, grinded up to 50 strength went into a local cave with a q5 stone axe.
got the following;
You don't even manage to scratch that rock.
That rock is very much too hard for you to mine.
Which sounds like i'm not very close. Should I give up until I get a another 40-50 mining ability? (which i'm thinking is some formula similiar to sqrt(tool * strength)?
Or if I keep looking around is it likely I'll stumble over softer rock on the same level?

1. For L1 50 str may be enough. Your stone axe is a crap, change it.Vengent wrote:Couple questions about mining.

2. Hardness is random (L1 is 10 at least)Sevenless wrote:When mining a tile, you'll perform a check of the sqrt(STR*ToolQ) against the rocks hardness. This determines the speed at which you mine, and also the amount of stamina that gets used per mining check as a result.

Re: Beginner Mining
You want a pickaxe really, at 50 Str with a decent cheap pickaxe you can mine lvl 1

Re: Beginner Mining
Meh, managed to dig up a pickaxe, only ql 14 though and a bear cape to up strength to 66.
Still was only able to click a single tile out of dozens, and ran out of stamina before it did anything.
Does it usually take multiple hits (and lots of water) for every tile?
Thanks for the info folks.

takes multiple hits, the higher your Str and pickaxe are the faster you mine, and less stam it takesVengent wrote:Meh, managed to dig up a pickaxe, only ql 14 though and a bear cape to up strength to 66.

Re: Beginner Mining
See, there's this quality ratio between a pickaxe and a stone axe. Sure, you mine faster with a pickaxe, and you use less stamina overall when the quality is equal, but that's just the thing. You should be able to get a q30 or 40 stone axe relatively easily, and that's going to outperform that q14 pickaxe. I had roughly calculated it at one point (roughly because there's no way to get exact numbers and with lag, you can't really be too precise in timing), but over the last year or so I've lost it (and no, I didn't post it on the forums like I should have... wanted to try and refine it to a "precise" forumla before doing that.)
You'll go slower, but with a q30 axe (any type) and 60 str, there's not much you can't mine on L1. Also: wine--bring a bucket of it (with a glass--have to have a glass to drink wine.)

Re: Beginner Mining
I'm still fairly low tech, no metal and trees are like 1 generation off start (ql 11 or 12) so better axe a long way off.
I scavenged the pickaxe from an abandoned town, or would be in even worse shape.
Only thing I have even some quality on is farming, (ql 72 carrots, 50 wheat, 50 flax, etc).
Nothing great, but I'm not really trying to trade or min/max, just slowly growing as a hermit.
Back to grinding strength for now.
Thanks folks.

Re: Beginner Mining
It varys quite a bit there's a spot I couldn't, just slighty, mine with 100~ STR and a q14 pick, but could using a q29 axe. And other spots I cut through like butter with 60 STR and a q10 Stone Axe.

Re: Beginner Mining
Dig around a bit. I bet you can find a q40+ stone around somewhere
With a q12 branch, that'll make a q26ish stone axe which will help you mine a lot more areas than that q14 pickaxe. sqrt (14 * 50) is approx 26. sqrt (26 * 50) is approx 35. That can be a huge difference.

Re: Beginner Mining
So sadly my beginner spot is not near a mountain, but I looked on the map, trekked the 15 or so mini maps worth of distance to a mountain only to find nearly the ENTIRE damn thing had a personal claim on it.MagicManICT wrote:Dig around a bit. Was only a few strips that didn't, and sadly nothing but ql10 stones in those strips.
<grumbles>
Is a given mountain pretty likely to have something better than 10? or it pretty rare even among various mountains?
