[Mod Tool] Resource Editor

Post by NeverCast »

## OVERVIEW ##

Hello Hearthlings,

This is my first post here ( Although I've edited it twice now ), and I'd just like to introduce you to something I'm working on. That is the Havenly Resource Editor, Allowing you to edit/import/export with any .res file for HnH. At the moment only Images are supported but that is because I've just not written the code for the other Layer Editors yet. It shouldn't take to long before I can have a preview out and available for public testing and use. It'll be great to see all the graphics mods and the like that come from this, it might even help enthusiastic developers make an entirely new game from the Client that the developers of HnH kindly made open source for us.

The application is written in .NET, C# to be more precise. dot NET Applications do incur a lot of criticism at times but only because of how easy it is to make really bad programs in .NET in a very short amount of time. I hope that this project will be close to professional, being stable and not crap :D

Here is the first screenshot I'm going to release, a basic overview of the UI. Simple but easy to understand. In this sample I've opened a single .res file, but opening the entire jar archive ( haven-res ) will be possible, as will importing and exporting directly from it without copying files to temporary directories or extracting the archive at any time.

Welcome to Haven and Hearth. That aside, not many people here use Linux. At least, from what I gathered. The most who do, dual-boot.

I'll prob be banned for evading so yeah. I think most people use windows.

You have a minor ban until tomorrow, is it too much to ask for you not to provoke an ip ban?

I'm on a mac (OS X), runs perfectly, like any computer should run Haven and Hearth unless it's like...

Thanks for the Welcome,

I didn't manage to get online today before the server went down, look forward to getting online once it's back up.
The reason I asked the question is because the tool I'm making is .NET and if there are modders out there that use another operating system I'll be doing Mono checks to make sure it will work for them too. It'd be good to hear people's opinions on it, I'm not sure if this community already has something like a Resource Editor, If not I'll be happy to be the first.

I am a winXP user, and to tell the truth, I dont like .Net oriented softwares, cause it requires various versions and frequent updates.
Why not simply use DLL files? I think that will be enough for the editor.
BTW, actually we have had a decoder which extract res from haven client. I think your editor should make a further step comparing with that decoder.

Browsing the forums on a primitive fifty dollar phone, oh it be so difficult. Right so yes I agree dot NET applications can be a horrible pain at times but a dll isn't the answer either as that still requires something to use it.

I'll be sure to target the application for the very old version 2 framework which was included with the service pack for XP and available in all windows following.

And I heard there was a decoder. I hope this program will be of more use and easier to do so.

Thanks for all the comments.
P.S. Am I in the wrong forum ? Is there one for tools ?
