Questions about silk.

Post by MickDick »

1. How do I increase silk quality? A list of ALL ways would be nice.

2. what causes/How do I prevent drops in quality?

3. What do I do with the lowest quality pieces of crap? (im talkin 1-5 quality here, plenty of 1's to go around :P)

I may have more questions in the future...

I may have more questions in the future...

1. The main thing to understand with silk is that it gains quality over time when it isn't being capped. Quality can be lowered by a herbalist table that's lower quality than the egg on it, and same thing if the mulberry leaves a silkworm is eating happens to be lower. As long as you make sure neither of those 2 factors are capping your production, if you selectively keep the higher quality cocoons for breeding the next generations, your silk quality should increase over time. When boiling cocoons, the cube root of (dex*sewing*farming) can softcap the quality of the filaments produced. Lastly, when spinning filaments together into thread, the quality of the spinning wheel can increase the quality of the thread (and same thing when making cloth on a loom).

List form:
  • Always keep the highest quality cocoons for breeding
    Herbalist table lowers quality
    Mulberry leaves lowers quality
    (dex*sewing*farming)^1/3 softcaps
    spinning wheel increases/decreases quality
    loom increases/decreases quality

2. Make sure you chose the highest quality eggs to be used for the next generations. If you do so, your silk quality should rise until you hit the point where your tables or mulberry leaves are capping.

3. You could perhaps try to make some functional silk items (a <Q10 merchant's robe still provides an extra row)

If you get any more questions, consider just bumping this thread so if someone happens to search for any silk related questions, they can find a handy dandy thread filled with answers :)

and to further clearify on what increases q, the leaves do (if higher q then the silkworms obviously lol) and when the moths mate the eggs produced is + or - a q's to.
and those are the only two ways to increase really.

jut pay attention to caps and keep stuff a bit over q (and try to let atleast 1/4 of each batch turn in to moths, which u also should pair up in to male/female pairs) and u should be fine.

Is there no way to check the quality of these things? Herbliast table, loom, spinning wheel?
or do I really have to destroy everything and start over when it comes to the tools.

Thanks for help btw.

This is the only thing that increases the quality of the raw silk filaments. It is a [-5, +5] range, just like all other things with farming. Leaves cannot increase the quality of the worms.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

last time i did silk (and i've done alot) leaves in cup where about 1-4q's higher then worms in said cupboard. i saw an increase of about 4 points (or up to the cap) of my worms when they turned into cocoons (obv i didn't check them every 4th hour, but i would guess it's when they eat this occurs) and this has always been the case afaik. if u doubt this u are welcome to test for urself and return with ur findings. all increased clearity about silk is always good :)

Does silkworms missing a meal make any difference or is it just there to save people some headaches?

And again:

Them missing a meal decreases the quality if I recall correctly (could be making that up though), and if they miss more than one meal, they die. Fill your cupboards with 12 silkworms and 48 leaves (4 empty spaces), for 100% guarentee none will starve.

For determining quality of them, there are formulas around which you can use simple algebra with to find the quality of them. Here's one I did for herbalist tables, the loom/spinning wheel you can find on your own with search. Although you have a herbalist table and a spinning wheel/loom, chances are their quality isn't up to snuff producing silk. You're going to need multiple table anyways, and the spinning wheel/loom should be made out of the highest quality materials you have available to you, so I recommend you just rebuild them.
