There's a thread with detailed information pertaining to the I/O inefficiency and what kind of skills, research, and technology it would require to fix it. I'd link it but I have to run. =o

Adding to that, what most people don't realize (or have realized and not saying) is that the price of an easily "moddable" client is lag (of a different sort). Specifically, all calculations of the game are done on the server and not in the client. So for example: if I open my inventory window, my client has to send a message to the server and the server msgs back saying whats in the window. That's a pretty ridiculous way of doing things; afaik no other MMO does things like this.

That's true, i pasted it sometime ago at "Inn of Brodgar" chat:

It would be very nice to work on Haven, but it cannot just be worked on "a little", for a couple of reasons:

Most importantly, we can't just make a change and leave it like that. Changing a game like Haven at all requires us to be actively involved and follow up on what happens and such.

Also, however, the codebase has progressed a lot during the work on Salem and has left the Haven codebase hopelessly obsolete. Large parts of Haven need to be rewritten, and it's just not meaningful to try to start working on details before that has been done.

On the positive side, however, the major systems work in Salem are pretty much done by now that we've got the basic multiserver functionality running, so with a little bit of luck I might be able to start redirect a bit of time towards that much-needed rewrite of Haven.
