Rare, but it's happened twice in my village alone.
Confirmed.

Trade for metal nuggets or find a cave. Playing as a hermit has its disadvantages, but can be easily worked around through trade. It is a social game, after all. Heck, I am willing to trade with you, given that you are close enough.

Going off topic, but anyone can put up a village claim and a solo player can maintain a small village with enough INT and CHA. I was maintaining a 100x100+ v-claim by myself in w5.

Could I ask what tile you mined? If it wasn't one of the ones on axis with the center of the ladder, that cave-in was because of faulty mining.

Make rustroot extract, prospect for ore, make minehole, it's pretty simple stuff. You can mine 4 tiles from the mine without a support, I doubt you wouldn't get a bar from that. Or just cave-dig like everyone else.
