After clicking the "Send Tiles" button, the uploader doesn't seem to be doing anything. (Showing no activity in task manager.) The last time I tried sending anything, I at least got a "unable to connect" type message. Now I get no messages, just absolutely no activity.

Weeell...I'll try mapping some places too (keyword being:try)!Does it work with the Ender launcher?Also I don't even know if I am N,NE,NW,S,SE,SW,E,W...
EDIT:Also I'm suggesting making new characters...but It's just me so yeah...

Yes it works with Ender (and all custom clients that store maps in "maps" folder = Ender forks). It doesn't work with default client because it doesn't save maps.

when you have made a local map you can look for it on World map to see where you are located - if you need more help to locate yourself post in that thread please

This means that the server isn't taking connections for whatever reason (internet issues, server closed to new connections for various possible reasons). All you can do is try again later. Sometimes it takes a few days of trying before you can get a connection to upload.

have the files been uploaded? (emptied "Sessions to be sent" Panel) - if yes it depends on alg to fit them in
