I think in a game like haven the only instance where a form of cheating described above compared to haven would be infinite springs. Similar to bugged bears giving endless intests W5 and such. Otherwise other forms of soft cheating can't make enough of an impact to break the game completely.Potjeh wrote:If you don't get banned from a server for playing CS with aimbot and wallhack, it still makes playing the game pointless.

Oh, get enough people that know how to use the combat system well enough and bot up an endless supply of combat alts that can run anyone that tries to rise up and be the dominant faction, and you'll be surprised at how quickly a game is ruined. Permadeath just makes this a bit harder. Lack of permadeath just makes this trivial (other than the bot creation). Bonus points if you can make a combat bot to randomly wander the land that can kill any newbie it runs across in a few hits.
Also, CS has leaderboards and stuff, yes, and some people HAVE to be number one on them. It's why I've quit playing nearly all FPS games online. I'll play with friends and friends of friends, but no matter how good the anti-cheating software, someone figures out a way around it. It's an endless battle.

Re: Play to win vs play as a scrub
I just want to point out that the rules of H&H do not define any "win" condition. Instead players set their own goals, and it is meaningless to say that one player is "playing to win" and another is not when they may have entirely different goals.
Once a man has changed the relationship between himself and his environment, he cannot return to the blissful ignorance he left. Motion, of necessity, involves a change in perspective.

Re: Play to win vs play as a scrub
honestly that article seems to have nothing relevant to say about haven, i understand someone shouldn't be mad in starcraft if their idea of a fun 1v1 is making their pylons into a smiley face, but if i was a seven year old enjoying making a sand castle and another seven year old spent all his time on the beach knocking other sandcastles down i probably should be mad, and he is an idiot dickhead.spectacle wrote:I just want to point out that the rules of H&H do not define any "win" condition. i understand "everyone" seems to think that the point of haven is to kill other people and laugh at people who do farming with a mouse but thats just because it hasn't been developed for years. really at the moment the point is essentially to make huge pavings and talk to russians about scrotum artists [and keep watching the numbers go higher, yay]
anyway, off i go, back to rl... all my characters are still alive unless someone who i gave details to killed it or something, in case someone thinks i ragequit :p
i miss some of you

ruining game spirit, your own reputation and losing devs trust? they learned not to trust us ages ago thoMagicManICT wrote:What are the consequences of breaking the rules in HnH?

These aren't consequences. Things such as bans, character/account deletions, loss of items--these are consequences.Tonkyhonk wrote:ruining game spirit, your own reputation and losing devs trust? they learned not to trust us ages ago thoMagicManICT wrote:What are the consequences of breaking the rules in HnH?![]()
edit: (there I go making half my post again) If a person is willing to play around at the fringes of the rules, then those are the kinds of things that a player doesn't really care about losing.

reputation plays a pretty big part bringing - even if its considered indirect - consequences tho, especially when "at the fringes"MagicManICT wrote:These aren't consequences. Re: Play to win vs play as a scrub
I don't speak of consequences from other players, but of consequences of violating actual game rules. Players can't really enforce rules within a game environment other than those soft rules that they come up amongst themselves such as "don't attack this town" or "don't gank characters unless you know they're KOS." Remember that, in Haven, there are few actual rules restricting what other players can and can't do. So far, there has been only a couple that have stood since the incident that spawned them, such as account theft and hacking. Most others have been enforced only for a short period of time until a game fix was developed (such as using islands as hearth vaults in w5 because there was nowhere to build a ram).
