Re: The Ghost of Christmas Future
No, ofc it doesn't - I agree and I should have been a bit clearer - I have been asked to join many villages both big and small during my time here, it has been my choice not to for the reasons I stated above. I would not feel comfortable when I was unable to contribute as much time and energy.Lunarius_Haberdash wrote:Anyone who would exclude you based on the limited amount of assistance you're able to give is being remarkably short-sighted. One of the villages I put together (way back in World 3) was entirely based on the concept of individuals living in a community, while being able to pursue their own goals at their own pace. It wasn't a 'village' in the way most villages are in this game, it was a location of people living in proximity together with a ruling body that took care of any issues they couldn't take care of themselves.Amanda44 wrote:And finally, - it's not possible for everyone to be able to play in a village. I've hermitted for three worlds now and I would love to either be part of a village or have my own villagers but rl makes it impossible, I don't have enough hrs in-game and sometimes i'm absent for days at a time, this wouldn't be fair on a village when I am unable to pull my wieght and not fair on villagers when I am not around consistently to encourage growth and direction. This shouldn't mean i'm then excluded from a cool game that I enjoy, there is a place for both types of players and all those imbetween.
There was no 'central village' to contribute to, other than certain civic projects that everyone pitched in on (Such as our weekly road-building gather). We had appointed guards, a lawspeaker, and another two villages we swore fealty to. Beyond that, everyone functioned as individuals, just like in a real community, a real city. Our time was our own, we traded what we had, both with each other and with other villages.
Not being able to play often does NOT exclude you from being part of a community.
Last world I had slightly more free time and have lived in a big faction, albiet part-time, I ran my own large hermitage, I ran a newb village, as Emerald did this world and helped, traded, interacted with all of those around me - which was my point - being a hermit doesn't exclude you from being part of the community unless you choose it to be that way. I don't agree that the games direction should be one of forcing players to interact more than they wish to.
This world I have less time and am not so immersed, I have a smaller base and no newb village but I still interact with everyone I meet in game, even hostiles, on a one-to-one people are much more ameniable and reasonable, even raiders.
Everyone must be able to choose how they want to play and how much they want to invovle themselves within the community.

diversified feeling sounds really nice, but does it really give us the actual reason to negotiate trades? (fighting over territory already happens with quality race.) it only encourages alts pclaiming all over the world, doesnt it?Lunarius_Haberdash wrote:The 'MMO' aspect of 'MMO'? Giving the world a diversified feel? Making there be a point to building your home 'here' instead of 'there' for reasons other than safety or political reasons? Giving us an actual reason to negotiate trades or fight over territory that has some actual value, instead of everything being the same?
the result would be just another "people get punished for playing legit" scheme it seems.
and im pretty sure many players hate the existence of alts, but hey, someone needs to find a decent solution first.
have you played salem? that has no crossroad teleportation but only the equivalent of hf (as homestead, but no items in inventory allowed unless from Boston), and Boston(the safe area where everyone spawns at the very beginning).Removing teleportation again makes this less likely, raiders are less likely to go far far afield when there's nowhere safe to run back to at a moments notice. They will be forced to face their enemies toe-to-toe.. Running into the hearth is no longer an option, and if the hearth is no longer your 'safe haven', if you can be summoned wherever you logged out for the night?
raiders group up and travel together to go on raiding sprees. raiders can plan ahead, defenders cannot. you make relations with other groups by ingame interactions, but the friends you made are not much help here, either, unless living next door and playing at the same time-zone every day. is it so much better that way?
i beg to disagree. That's because in most MMO's resources of all kinds are neigh on infinite, such is not the case here. Resources are the backbone of civilization and culture, so should it be here.

Picture looks very nice, provided the gameplay is the same I wouldn't mind graphic improvements that held true to the current feel and is NOT rendeered 3d crap. I mean, they wanted different, so they made Salem, Salem should be the place where a different game is made/played with, if that be the desire. Don't Fix" a concept that isn't broken, People adore Haven because it is Haven, being "MORE" haven is fine, being something "Other" than Haven would be as much of a "no thanks" as Salem. If it is changed drastically, I hope someone is allowed to run a "Classic" server...lol

I'm not sure what you disagree about there. In most MMOs, resources are infinite. They pretty much are here, too, with a couple of exceptions. (That I think on it, I can't think of a single MMO with completely limited resources.)Tonkyhonk wrote:i beg to disagree.Lunarius_Haberdash wrote:That's because in most MMO's resources of all kinds are neigh on infinite, such is not the case here. Limiting what a person can aquire in an MMO is a horrible design decision when aiming for a solid player base. Most people are deterred by the impossibility of doing some stuff regardless of time commitment.
EDIT : you could even say its hardcore

I see what you're saying, tonky, but in the current game, high quality resources are king. With those, you can remake any character faster. If you lose the resources, you're back to square one. With permadeath, I'm not sure the character should be the primary focus, anyway. It should be a major focus, such as with a queen in chess (something you don't want to lose, but can continue playing without), and right now, I don't even think it's that unless you're a hermit playing at a leisurely pace.
