If you can put together an armour set that blocks at least 20 damage (cows do 20 damage, right?), you don't need any skill values, you just need to buy the skills you need for the required combat manoeuvres.

I don't think I can. I tried to fight a cow earlier today, and it did about 20 damage on every hit even though my melee skill is 30.

He means armor as in Damage Reduction. You probably won't be able to get that without metal or high level leather armors.

a set of q90 leather armor, pants, and boots would give about 24. not sure what the armor is like on a boar tusk helm but that would help as well.
or you could probably trade for a q90 bronze plate, that should give about 24 by itself
