Are ants supposed to be worse than bears?

I lost thirteen hhp out of thirty in a few seconds trying to raid an ant hill. It took me that long to see that I was taking more than a single point or two of damage and run away.

The next day I was attacked by a bear. I was knocked unconscious instantly. I lost one hhp.

This seems a little... out of balance. Ants: 13, Bears: 1?

don't raid the ant hill while the ants are alive and patrolling. kill the ants first, they can usually be killed in 1 or 2 hits especially from a bow. You can kill the mobile ants one by one, THEN raid the hill. That way you don't get gang-banged by 3 ants simultaniously.

Oh, I can see my technique was off. Next time I want to attack an ant hill I am going to lead the ants far, far away and then double back or something. My query was about the relative amount of damage, especially where I took far more damage without being knocked out than I did when the one-hit felled me.

ants do 1 shp and 1 hhp per attack and continue attacking. a bear does maybe 60ish shp damage and 1 hhp damage and walks off.

get your unarmed or melee skill to 8 or so, get some rabbit skins and make some leather armor, and take them 1 at a time. until then, stick to eating chantrelles, fish, rabbit, spindly taproot, fruit, or if you're lucky, some carrots or grapes from your garden. you can also eat raw onions if they are below q10.

But yeah, you shouldn't fight ants if they can hit you regularly. HHP is useless later on in the game, and as such isn't balanced much at all. However, recovering HHP at a low level is a p.i.t.a. 10 melee and a shield should be more than sufficient though. gl

Also, make some nettle clothes to boost unarmed if you take them on hand to hand.
