Renaming Shady Acres

Post by Jfloyd »

I utterly despise the name. It's not Shady, and it's not the size of many acres. :P
Here's a list of names I like, but feel free to contribute:
Linhollow
Ironwyn
Bluehaven
Aelhollow
Morwall
Dormead
Eurona

It's original owner named it Shadyacre and so that is what I'll forever refer to it as. I'm sure most other people will too.

To reinforce the Slavic and Germanic setting of the game, why not choose a Slavic or Germanic name? Yes, English names are technically Germanic too, but you know what I mean.

Well, what ever I choose is what I'm going to call it. So I guess this is just a notification, with a vote :P

Now if you don't mind, Shady Acres is plenty Germanic as it is: "Shade" can be traced through Old English into Proto-Germanic and even to Proto-Indoeuropean (skotwos -> skaðwoz -> sceadu -> shade) and cognates with German "Schatten" and Swedish "skugga"; "Acre", in turn, can be traced just as far (hégros -> akraz -> æcer -> acre) and cognates, at least, with Swedish "åker" (and probably also, via Latin, with "agriculture"). The literal Swedish translation, "Skuggåker", would be a fully valid Swedish village name; it sounds so common that it wouldn't surprise me if it even exists.

Maybe it would be possible to translate it into Middle English and halfway back, to make it sound like a more canonical place name, but I'm not sure how that would turn out in reality.

Well, of the people that actually want me to change it, those people chose Blue Haven. Which is just as good as Shady Acres :P

I did put a disclaimer saying that English names are technically Germanic :P

But I still maintain that Hladojutra looks better than Shady Acres.

Well, if you necessarily, then, want something less English (or Northwest-Germanic, as Jorb and I refer to it), how about "Schadfeld"?

Gah. No. (Don't ban me for arguing). I've made up my mind. It's now Blue Haven.
