Have crops influence soil nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium). No tiers, just affecting yields. Some low end crops wouldn't need any but would add some, and some high end crops would require precise ratios to get more out of the field than you planted.

I had never heard of pedology before the time of research and had not heard of edaphology until you mentioned it. Having Googled it, I tend to agree though.
