I'm not rose tinting things (at least not intentionally) and neither did I want to make Jorb and Loftar sound like saints. People's interests usually come before being nice, but I was at least under the impression that they tried to keep it playable for non-cash-shop-users without too much pay2win stuff. Could also just have been because of the low amount of players in general. From my perception the cash shop system was okay. I also came rather late to the party in Salem so I don't even know how things were before.

But sure, if people wanted to waste lots of cash on the ingame currency they could do that. I just don't think that it was so super useful. Most of the things the NPCs sold could be produced in your own base with a small bit of effort later. However, some items were quite pricy and sold only in town. I recall glass being an item that was pretty annoying because you needed it for cupboards and houses.

Has also been a while since I played Salem, so excuse me if my memory is a bit clouded by now.

Salem's payment model was terrible. If they're gonna do microtransaction, the least evil would be one-off payments to unlock skills on an account, and they'd stay unlocked even if the character dies. By unlock I mean make them available for buying with LP, not just handing them out. If there's enough free skills and the paid skills are non-critical specialist skills (ie some high end crafting, not combat moves), the game should be playable for freeloaders.

Bob dole wouldn't mind special jewelry recipe with great stats as a transaction.
Early world exploit: Put your hearthfire inside a cave, then hold shift to position a claim right in front of a cave. After 8 hours the claim will be unbreakable. Since your hearthfire is inside the cave, you can still get back inside, and leave, but nobody will be able to enter, effectively making you unraidable for the first 3-7 days. Enjoy

the reason why I don't want to play the current haven is the low quality graphics and the game feels somewhat dead :x

Neither of those things are likely to change with Hafen, just get started and try to get a feel for things while you wait

That's a bullshit argument, there are texture mods: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=19037#p222191, and if you are playing alone you can join a village.
And if you actually think 2d is 'low quality graphics' for you, you can always play Salem...

If I can boat around for an hour and not even find one remotely active base, the game feels pretty dead.
