My interpretation was that unless you were sleeping in the lean to, anything in it is accessible by anyone without leaving scents...
I think it's a good improvement, it doesn't seem like it was ever meant for hardcore protection or anything

The leanto will protect you from other nubs who don't have theft yet. That's about it, and also about what you might need at that stage.
