It's in the options, you need to turn highlighting on. Keep clicking on new things until it works.
I turned every possible thing on, but i still cant see. I can see animals on the map, but only animals.
EDIT: Ok, fixed it, i only checked the things in "Xtended" but i didnt see the tools.

It does get updated when Ender feels the need for it - which isn't that often (last was 20 Jan 2014). The updater.jar is made to get updates but you still have to run it manually - there is no autoupdate.
You always can take a look at the first post in this threads for updates as it would get announced there.
