How do I not throw the bucket in the water

When I've filled it with water and don't have room to equip it?

I don't think its possible you need an empty hand slot to carry a full bucket

Can't be swapped easily, I'm afraid. Take care that you have a hand free for it.

Would be nice if you could place equipment on a slot to switch things if you already had something equipped there...

but we can't have nice things.
