My suggestion is that you have an easily accessible guide that takes you through the steps. From "oh look at this website" all the way to "hey I'm logging into the game". I clicked download the the file doesn't know what it is on my PC and I don't know what to run it is so right now I quit. I am bookmarking this game for future when hopefully it is easier to install.

You just need to install the JRE, Java Runtime. That allows you to play the game from any platform or OS wich supports Java. And this way the developers dont need to compile the game for each platform. Just install it and play the client you downloaded from this web.
That client will let you play, but its quite limited. For this reason most of the people uses modified clients like "Enders client". If you choose to use any of them you'll need to modify the run.bat. This should definetely get better, but I'm not sure how.
