Actually, it should be possible to build on grassland. Are you sure that nothing is blocking the construction site, yourself included?
Oh, and you don't need to plough grass to pave it.

I was baffled at first as well; I simply couldn't build it. Later it was explained to me that I need the stone floor first, yeah.

You do need it paved,
plough a 5x5 square and pave all 25 tiles.

I simply can't seem to build the log cabin at all, I've paved an area with more than enough room and it still says "You cannot build that there".

Any ideas?

Maybe one of your paved spots has decayed but the map has not yet updated to show that.
Usually when you plough the decayed tiles in an already ploughed field a few more spots suddenly revert to appearing unploughed due to the same kind of a delay. Perhaps trying to plough a ring around your construction site would make one of the stone tiles go back to unpaved. Or you could try putting a stone in inventory and patiently clicking each one of the tiles in your foundation with the paving tool tip to see if they would accept the stone.
After that I would try emptying the cupboards and moving them, although I am sure that is not it.
Also, are you sure there is not a rat or something behind the cupboards invisible making it impossible to put the house down?

Yeah I stood behind the cupboards and the only yellow outline was myself, I'm going to move the cupboards and try again in a few minutes.
EDIT: Turns out one small square wasn't paved, everything is fine now thanks.
