Request: Jorb joining a village for science

Post by venatorvenator »

It's a request: In case you don't do that already, would you join a village to see how the game feels with a developed industry and crafting operation, and with all the needs a large village has?

That's beacuse you mentioned that you walked your character far away from everyone to hermit undisturbed, and in your posts you seem to have a different perspective than groups do, because hermits have a different experience. With the mining update, for example:
jorb wrote:Perhaps this patch took us from DEFCON 5 to DEFCON 4, but we are not presently looking for atomic doom. For my own character, this patch changed absolutely nothing for the worse, and I still aim to plant trees, do silk, and raise cattle, so those are my personal plans.
Also because, while it seems you have made a lot of effort to make raiding mechanics harder, with higher costs for rams, master and slave key mechanics, cornerpost soak progression, pc claim cooldown etc, it has backfired and turned it instead into a mole-planting game that ignores those mechanics to score a raid, which is bad for large groups that are interested in recruiting new people and keeping a community interested, but that's a concern of large villages only and is only a problem for those who actually live in one. As this thread points out: viewtopic.php?f=43&t=45104#p586127 .

Hence the request. It would be neat if you considered joining a village under a fake character to see how the mechanics and updates affect them, how the end game is played and such. I don't mean that you should give preference to developed villages in your patches, but just to live there and experience first hand how they are handling the game to better tailor future changes. After all there's only so much one can learn from biased forum complaints.

I do feel it would be great if somehow we could communicate the village experience to the devs, since a good chunk of the population plays in villages. I definitely support that initiative.

I disagree wholeheartedly about raiding being more difficult though. An established village was always immune to being rammed if they did their ram checks properly. Post drying, or wall hardening it's no different. The claim change is likewise akin to a village bannering out to knock out your claim. The only net difference is that rams can't be placed casually and that hermits are less attractive to raid. Frankly, hermits being highly attractive raid targets isn't healthy for the game anyway.

I think full village raids should be rare.

Ambushes of hunters/foragers should be possible to do though. So maybe auto hearth should be looked at.

If he joins a village on a new fake account it won't be much of a village, because successful villages only recruit people with a decently long record in the game (see Rl'yeh for reason why).

I agree that jorb should experience village life, but people would complain of favoritism of whatever village he joined.

It should obviously be the Anal Friends village. Problem is, we wouldn't accept him, because he's too much of a LARPer (in W2 Xanadu he insisted we have cornerposts every ten tiles of brickwall just because it looks pretty).

Maybe. I'm thinking more in terms of ram cost, on killing alts with keys to get in, and on that fact that you can't bubble rams anymore, placing a cornerpost and hoping no one sees it for a day then walling it and building a ram inside.

I disagree on the hermits being safer though. With the high FEP bonus the metal update allowed us, palibashers should be easier to build than before in my opinion.

Emphatically a lie, good sir. I wanted us to have a nice main gate consisting of two gates.
