Lower-middle Tier Armor Suggestions

Armored Skirt- called Pteruges by the Romans, this armor protected the upper legs with overlapping strips of leather which were studded or covered with thin strips of metal for additional protection. Could be crafted with a Hunter's Belt as an ingredient, requiring an additional 4-6 leather and a bar of hard metal. Would of course occupy the same belt slot.

Hobnailed Boots- Hard leather, cloth, and hard metal nuggets. Kind of an intermediary between Leather Boots and Ranger's Boots.

Early world exploit: Put your hearthfire inside a cave, then hold shift to position a claim right in front of a cave. After 8 hours the claim will be unbreakable. Since your hearthfire is inside the cave, you can still get back inside, and leave, but nobody will be able to enter, effectively making you unraidable for the first 3-7 days. Enjoy

no, they work like knee and leg pads. It isn't supposed to go all around the leg.
