I think another way of going at this, to make it a tad more balanced, would be to use the Offline Character's Stealth Stat as a way of mitigating HOW much of the inventory the thief can see. Wouldn't that be neat?
Stealth would finally be useful to non-menacing characters.
Bad idea, because then you can look into the fire and in case you find combat gear in the inventory you can loot that and then wait for the character to login to slaughter a defenseless one with only tsacks in the hands to club you with.
If your enemies hide behind walls then break them to get to them....

What if a perpetrator could peak inside of a hearthfire and take the stuff inside of a hearthling's inventory (not equipment or study slots)?

Poor poor raiders game is booming with players and the poor raiders are in distress.

My point was that it happens that people (at least on characters that are not only PvP alts) logout in inventory expanded mode (with tsacks equipped) at times, and not with the combat gear they have on them being equipped.
First of all, characters of multi-use do not store their armor inside of their inventory. They put it inside of cupboards/hang on walls (that happened when R'lyeh got raided).
Secondly, anyone who logs in while their village is being raided is dead regardless they have a shield or not. Maybe that is because it takes a few seconds to load, who knows?
Thirdly, no-one will log in to their main characters, if they know they are being raided. If they will do, only if they are sure the characters are safe (using alts to scout). If you did not expect the raid and to be attacked, you are dead inside of a closed space (since raiders will also make sure to secure the breaches).
I have participated many raids since W3. Been there, done that. Never seen anyone surviving in a village after logging in in the middle of a raid. Does not matter whether the dude had a shield&sword or not. Moreover, people tend to have several layers of brickwalls and might have their fighter character's hearthfire to be stored in a brickwall inside of the village.
