With everything becoming limited, I guess its time for some stockpile discussion. Slap me if someone had this idea before, but a quick search didnt show me any topic which adresses my idea.
Now, this is not another thread about getting new containers, I mean actual stockpiles. Let me explain.
Right now we have a lot of stumps in our village and they have to be removed - but where should we put all the blocks and bricks until we have a good use for them? Throwing them away? Not good, because one block equals 5 branches now, and there is a lot of stuff which doesnt need high quality blocks. So we just build a "palisade cornerpost" construction site and fill it up with blocks. Problem solved, 100 blocks conveniently stored on a 1x1 square, and if somebody needs them, he just takes them out again. Same goes for bricks and "brick wall corner posts", branches and wisker baskets, on a larger scale kilns to store clay,...
I think you get what I mean. Now, actually it would be nice to have some kind of buildable stockpile. Maybe 3 variations, one 2x2, one 3x3, one 4x4 (or so), each having more storage space in return of higher costs, of course. They should be fairly easy and early buildable, as it wouldnt make sense if it is an endgame construction, and it should allow to store a decent number of raw materials (with emphasis on raw materials!). My bet that making the storage system like a construction site is the easiest way to do it. As far as Ive thought, this should be fairly unexploitable, because its just a pretty storage. I know, the palisade/brick wall/whatever construction sites are quite efficient storages right now, but I think its not too difficult to implement and it would add something to the game.
So what do you think? I hope I expressed myself well enough
So long,
Leo

I think the palisade/brickwall covers up nice enough, but not everyone has yeomanry. Noob friendly new content, sure why not :')

Re: Stockpiles
Of course the stockpile should be more user friendly and practical than some construction site. And it looks nice and busy :^)

Re: Stockpiles
sure, it's come up a few times in various threads, i don't recall a specific thread about it though. i feel like it's a pretty good idea, and would be visually more appealing and immersive than a bunch of construction signs. i really can't think of any drawbacks to it either. not sure if different sizes are really necessary unless the 2x2 one gave more than 4x the storage than a 1x1 and so on. it should have a similar interface to the construction sign, imo. and shift+mousewheel functionality of course.

Re: Stockpiles
Yea I'd described something similar but called it a 'heap' which would lose items to decay and prior to that a similar 'bin' which is a cupboard sized furniture item using the same single-type rule but lacks the decay loss effect. Both would need some specific graphics so you can clearly see whats in them which would be a great improvement over construction sites.
Still those construction sites are an annoying way to store stuff, their big and your constantly running into the invisible corners. How about a new construction called "Heap" it takes no material to build and no skill to make, once the first item is placed in it then it becomes a "heap of that type" and can store a large number of items of that type (two or three cupboard worth perhaps), and their is a graphic to reflect what it's holding (object types are limited by available graphics). The downside is that it takes decay hits when outside and losses 1 item each hit and its 2x2 so its a bit tricky though not impossible to use indoors. Basically this is the "Bin" idea I proposed earlier just bigger and without the bin. I could easily see people using these for things like wood blocks, branches, stone, straw, ore all sorts of bulk stuff that people routinely put in piles in real life.

Oh yes, sorry, thats exactly what I had in mind. I like the idea with decay hit and item loss.

Re: Stockpiles
I have suggested this before, so I am definitely for it. I'm not sure if we need to lose items to decay, but they should probably be subject to some sort of decay.
I had suggested them as a way of making construction sites susceptible to decay (get rid of all those ugly bear traps and random looms).
Perhaps the sign system used on vending stands could be utilized to tell apart the different kinds of stockpiles.

Re: Stockpiles
Maybe instead of having a storage like the usual ones, we could have them with empty boxes to start, and if you were to place one block in there, an image of a block would appear, place another block and the squares would be there, but the number two by the block.
1x1 with a maximum of one square, 2x2 four Etc. Etc.?

Re: Stockpiles
Sounds great, if that is possible. I wont have no problem with a defined stockpile, but a dynamic stockpile (with graphics) would be awesomeness to the max.

Re: Stockpiles
If dynamic sizes are done it might be best to use some kind of area based designation, like laying down zones in SimCity 2000, storage capacity would be proportional to area. The graphic would be some kind of 1x1 picture of a pile of the item and it just gets repeated across the stockpile.
Also remember that decay hits can be avoided by putting them indoors, the same rule that applies to everything else.
