Make Improving Skills More Like FEP | Books

Post by moor-i-arthy »

I hate the present learning point system. Totally. When the farmer SUDDENLY draws sword, drops his 200k LP to melee fight and pwns big bad bear or robber that trespasses his farm I shit bricks.
I think that to be farmer one should harvest and plant crops and to be warrior one should fight and fight and fight.
System may be similar to FEP-system. Farmer gather crops, gets Skill Event Points and eventually rises his skill. Warrior kills someone with sword and gets Melee SEP etc:
Unarmed Combat - killing someone with bare hands
Melee Combat - killing with weapon
Marksmanship - making bow, killing with bow
Exploration - drawing maps, foraging
Stealth - at this moment I don't know how it can be trained. Maybe if it will be useful to evade meet with a boar
Sewing - tanning skin, crafting
Smithing - digging ore, crafting
Carpentry - chopping trees, crafting
Cooking - milking cows, collecting honey, crafting
Farming - harvesting and sewing
Survival - skinning, crafting.

And one other idea. Books. Master in any skill can write a book. It should be relatively expensive: for example, 2 liters of ink and 50 lists of parchment.
Reading it may take a long time or it must be red, say, ten times but there is two hour-cooldown before reading. When read, the book raises your skill to up to one-half of reader's skill that was used in book.

LP still can be useful only for learning lores and therefore it should be much more rare resource.

That's how I see.

Reason: 'Learning system totally ruined'? What? Sounds more like a comment about the OP.

This isn't Runescape. I'd rather spend hours having fun grinding LP to buy enough combat skill to defend myself, than spend depressive hours hitting stuff with a stone axe to get my melee skill up. And then doing the same for my unarmed. And marksmanship.

As for books, I think it's an interesting idea, albeit absolutely overpowered. Getting half of someone's skill just by reading a book? Here, I'll invite all my friends, and give them books I made with 100 marksmanship, and super-slings. That won't be game-breaking at all. It would give new players with high-level friends a massive advantage over everyone else. I honestly wouldn't like the idea of spending a month grinding 50 in a skill, when my neighbor can read a book in a few hours of AFKing to get the same result.

The current learning system is fine.

Agreed. The variance in different skills in H&H isn't great enough to be able to make each skill affect its own experience. How would you train your stealth high without getting yourself killed, shoved into a barrel, and find your body drifting downstream? :D

I agree. Instead, maybe you can raise a skill to level (n+1) for every 5n quality of the book. And still require a fair few resources to make the book, including skill level at least as great as the quality of the book you end up making (but quality would also be determined by parchment quality etc.). That way you get very good at a skill, make 50-100q books, and trade them. They'd give a noob 10-20 levels in that skill. You could tweak the formula for relationship between quality and levels gained if that's too much of a downgrade.

Sorry, but I disagree OP. Bad idea.

Would make the game even more grindy than it is, and make self-defence for most of the players even less viable than it is now.

It is grindy now.
Those plow racers make me cry even now with lp nerfed.
So much for self defence: one should fight or think tricky to defend self. It is reality.
Of course if you are not a farmer afraid that you will be pwned if you'll have to learn how to fight to defend yourself. :D
I think this system make the game more profession-oriented

Not enough viable ways of getting skill-specific experience in H&H. See my post.

Retarded idea; been posted before; do not want.
"Since all men count themselves righteous, and since
no righteous man raises his hand against the innocent,
a man need only strike another to make him evil."

But each skill has its applications, isn't it?
So if its not about your smithing opposed tanner's sewing are there any problems?

I see problem only in Stealth skill opposed by Exploration but it can be united to one skill as, say, Rangery?

And about books: I proposed raising skill to maximum of one-half of writer's one because novice smith barely can learn something an aged expert one. So it should not add skillpoints but instead raise to a quantity

This is why my skill decay idea works! It helps both sides.
