As stated by the devs:
You cannot study the first attack of a particular kind using a Combat Instruction, which, instead, must still be learned from an animal. If you have a Combat Instruction in your Study Report, however, you will -- this specifically for the first attack of that kind -- always receive the attack in question from any animal which gives it, removing the random chance to get that particular attack. Should a Combat Instruction thus help you to get the first attack of a particular kind, it will be consumed at no cost in LP.
As i understand it:
If i have a combat instruction for take aim in my study inventory and i do not have any instance of take aim in my deck, i should receive take aim from the first animal that can grant take aim. As it seems, this does not work for me killing ants.
The wiki might just be mistaken and ants are not able to yield this attack.

Pretty sure all of this works only on foxes and stronger

Re: Combat instructions: learning first attack doesnt work
From patch notes:
It also does not say what animal you may not get it from, only that you get the move from the appropriate animal. If ants will give you a combat move, then you can get it by farming ants.
It is worth noting that observation has shown ants to be a relatively low rate of gaining moves, at least from my experience and the complaints I've seen on the forums. Add in the armor pentration and annoyance of antacid burns... Well, I think everyone has given up grinding moves on ants now.
It does not say you will get it on the first animal you kill. It says that you will get the instructed move the first time you get a move from a killjorb wrote:
- Added "Combat Instructions". Combat Instructions can be used to teach attacks and moves to others.
- You may craft a Combat Instruction by holding a Parchment, and right-clicking an attack or move you wish to describe in the "Martial Arts & Combat Schools" subsection of your character sheet.
- A combat instruction is studied in the Study Report just as a curiosity would be, but consumes LP upon completion, rather than giving it.
- A combat instruction records the number of the particular attack whoever crafted it had, and can be used by others to learn the move in question up to that level. (I.e 4xPunch, or whatever).

Re: Combat instructions: learning first attack doesnt work
To be fair the text says you will "always" receive the attack in question. So i would expect it to be on the first kill, otherwise it wouldnt be always. To add to that it also states that is does remove the random effect. Having to kill multiple animals would also be just like that - a random effect.

Re: Combat instructions: learning first attack doesnt work
I reported this "bug" first day. I got an attack from ants, bats, foxes, badgers, but not take aim (I was studying take aim). Then I killed 2 boars, the first one dropped no moves, the second one dropped take aim.
I don't know if only boars now give take aim

Maybe a poor wording, but you don't always get a combat move from a kill. It's hard to express this in a sensible matter that will make sense to everyone. You always get the studied move, yes, but no guarantee you actually get a move on any particular kill. Maybe a better wording for the mechanic should be, if this is the way it is intended to work, "If you have not learned the move previously (have 0 of that card in your list), you will always get the studied move when you would normally get any other move." Maybe that's not much better. I'm not sure.Alayah wrote:To be fair the text says you will "always" receive the attack in question.
I will note I have no inside information on this, I'm just drawing logical conclusions based on how current mechanics work.

That is btw also not true. I have been getting zig zag move from a boar while i was studying opp knocks to get the skill. There are other examples in different combinations. You always get the studied move, yes,

This is actually a better concrete example of the bug.Alayah wrote:That is btw also not true. I have been getting zig zag move from a boar while i was studying opp knocks to get the skill. There are other examples in different combinations. You always get the studied move, yes,
My post was more an attempt to clarify the mechanic. Let me revise my post to make that clear.

Suspect no bug. The exact wording and mechanic aside it should help significantly, and I believe it does.
