This is unlikely to have a big impact if the series of boxes are limited (sold for a short time or a certain amount), and the chance of falling out of rare resources will not be very high. Just need to think about the content and percentage of luck. For example, you can add interest to the boxes of one of the old cosmetic hats with a small chance. And to make boxes a la tokens (transmitted, stored).

The boxes I got from the christmas questing special contained (iirc), among other stuff, saws and bows of somewhat decent quality, merc rings, gold nuggets, salt, perls, tin soldiers, rock crystals, food, tree seeds, symbel, ...

Should such stuff be obtainable hour zero of a new world it would massively speedup early game for the rich few, thus be p2w.
