Well, my thoughts on this is while you can learn science (coding,etc..) and the results you get are proportional to your effort, art is something you cannot really learn, or you have an artist vocation in you or there is very little you can do about, of course you can learn and improve also on this regard, but you cannot learn on how to get new ideas.MagicManICT wrote:art and literature are probably more important to game design than math

All great artists are made, as much or more so than great scientists and engineers. Do people have a natural aptitude for talents? Sure, and it makes it easier, but natural aptitudes only get you so far without training and knowledge.
And the creative process is a learning one. There is little that is natural or intuitive about it. Let's not forget to mention that engineering and science are as much about the creative process--connecting things that seem dissimilar in new and strange ways.

Yeah sure I agree, but I mean, to me, natural aptitudes are more important on the creative/artist side, cause without you cannot be an artist, viceversa even without aptitudes but with a lot of effort you can be an engineer ... if you can see what I mean ...

Not that I necessarily believe that he's correct, but Jeff Atwood seems to disagree.MagicManICT wrote:You can teach almost anyone to program

I would start by watching some game design time challenges like Lundum Dare where people make simple games in a weekend. You'll soon see there's a lot of ways to go about game development. Decide how you want to approach it; do you want to use Unity? Unreal? Or would you rather make something from scratch with OpenGL? From there, you'll find most of these big name game engines and GPU APIs have plenty of tutorials out there.xChapx wrote:One thing i still dont understand about game developing is where do you start
As said in this thread, prebuilt game engines vs creating your own is mostly personal preference, so don't be discouraged to start out with Unity or be afraid to dive right into OpenGL.

I'd say start with a good book on game design 101. There's several out there. Some look at the design process alone. Others introduce programming along with it in C# for Unity or C++, and think I've seen some in Visual Basic or Java. To put it simply, start with pen and paper (or keyboard and computer, tablet, whiteboard... something to write on/with) and start describing your game, make some drawings and such, that sort of thing.
You don't really need to be picking through engines until you know what you're creating, the needs of the creation, and what kind of programming skills you bring to the table. Stick with what's simple to start.

Stay away from pre-built softwares, Unity, etc... if your aim is to learn you have to write your code from scratch.
I already suggested this Javascript engine multiple times, I think it's one of the easiest approach you can have: IvanK Lib
There are some basic demos already explained on his site, if you litterally don't know anything about coding, the easiest thing you can do is watching some youtube videos about basic Javascript notions or read some basic guide on the web ... in just a few hours, or maybe days, it depends on you ... you can easily read the code written in those demos and easily replicate the Keyboard Events one , for example, where you can move your sprite with arrows keys on your keyboard.
All of this will be just a small intruduction of what coding means, while having fun creating a small game, but very usefull most of all to understand if you like it or not.
P.S. I know it's easy, but still very powerfull engine, cause I made myself a small game some time ago using it.

If you like coding you should code, not study physics. Benefit from knowing physics is next to none.sMartins wrote: cause they can help if you plan to attend a coding degree later at University or if you want to learn coding later on .... it's always better ....
I have also noticed that a degree might not have the same definition/meaning in Finland and in US or some other countries. #latestagecapitalism
I guess it depends on what you mean by programming. I have seen some people try programming because they were basically forced to, and I can confirm that it is not for everyone. Or maybe they are just slow learners... Or most likely dont care to even try to learn, so they dont.loftar wrote:Not that I necessarily believe that he's correct, but Jeff Atwood seems to disagree.MagicManICT wrote:You can teach almost anyone to program
I dont like the thing that is currently happening in many countries. Trying to make EVERYONE programmers, and make everyone program in school and so on. I guess its to make more competition and lower the wages. Media in Finland is constantly making news about programmers/developers having big wages, and companies struggling to get programmers even though they are paying a lot and stuff. But what everyone forgets to mention, is that those companies want good, experienced programmers. Theres plenty of programmers in Finland and most of them dont fill these criteria, because they are just bad. I fear that there is rush for people to get educated in computer sciences, only because they think they can earn big money by becoming programmers, but they never become good programmers. Leading to a increasing amount of not-so-good coders, causing even more unemployment and stuff.

If you're in the US, definitely don't get a gaming degree. You can learn in 3 months what you'd learn in 4 years just following tutorials and monkeying around in your environment of choice. Most development studios hiring even look for an indie game release over a degree. If you must, just get a computer science degree. You'll learn a lot more and it will get you further.shubla wrote:If you like coding you should code, not study physics. There are degrees specifically for game making in US?Zampfeo wrote: If you're in the US, definitely don't get a gaming degree. You really have it bad over there. Sounds like a poor attempt to fool people who want to make gams in order to gain profit for "teaching" them.
Programming is never ending learning process anyway, there will always be new things to learn, as languages and libraries get new versions and so on, even if you would focus on some specific kind of programming.
Though I guess there are also some boring 9-5 office jobs where you do the same thing for whole day from week to week and year to year, not learning much, not doing much. Pretending to be working when your boss comes near.
