I'm in Italy and I think ours Universities are good, if you are not a genius that can learn everything by your own but just a common person like the majority, then University is required to learn in depth any discipline, most of all scientific ones, like coding.Zampfeo wrote:If you're in the US, definitely don't get a gaming degree. You can learn in 3 months what you'd learn in 4 years just following tutorials and monkeying around in your environment of choice. Most development studios hiring even look for an indie game release over a degree. If you must, just get a computer science degree. You'll learn a lot more and it will get you further.shubla wrote:If you like coding you should code, not study physics. I have also noticed that a degree might not have the same definition/meaning in Finland and in US or some other countries. #latestagecapitalism

You really have it bad over there. Sounds like a poor attempt to fool people who want to make gams in order to gain profit for "teaching" them.
That's exactly it. There's a lot of naive gamers who have never seen an IDE or modeling software in their lives that these universities target. Even the public ones aren't going to get you far. You're better off learning on your own.
I found this video interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYN29fI4Xag
I'm not so sure a degree is absolutely required for programming. I received a 2-year degree and the first couple classes on programming fundamentals helped a lot, but beyond that I learned much more just from personal and work experience. I feel like programming is mostly understanding fundamentals and the ability to sift through the documentation for whatever environment you're working in. Everything else is just becoming familiar with common function calls and that comes best from experience.sMartins wrote:I'm in Italy and I think ours Universities are good, if you are not a genius that can learn everything by your own but just a common person like the majority, then University is required to learn in depth any discipline, most of all scientific ones, like coding.

It depends what you code, but in general you dont reaally need some university to teach you things. You have to learn alot by yourself anyway.sMartins wrote:University is required to learn in depth any discipline, most of all scientific ones, like coding.
Maybe if you go to some very specific advanced field, like.. Algorithms, machine learning, that kind of stuff. Or want to do research about them.
When you know basics and how to google and use APIs you are fine learing the other stuff by yourself.

Pretty sure the first was in Europe, next was in Japan. Full Sail in Vancouver opened one in the mid-late 90s (want to say around 97 or so) supported by Nintendo. The first one actually in the US that I'm aware of was a master's program (The Guild Hall at Southern Methodist University, Texas), so you have to have a bacchelor's degree (or show equivalent knowledge) before you can even enter it. But yes, there are "game design" degrees in the US and they are a combination of visual arts, computer science, and related fields... at least the ones I've looked at.shubla wrote:There are degrees specifically for game making in US?
No. You can learn in under a year the programming techniques that are taught in a four year BS program. What you don't get from that technical training is the broader education (English, more useful math, philosophy, business, arts, etc) and the deeper theory classes you have access to that you need the more extensive math and logic training for.Zampfeo wrote:I'm not so sure a degree is absolutely required for programming.
There are plenty of jobs looking for tech support and code maintenance, though, where you only need the technical training. They don't pay as well as software engineers, but if you're looking at the long term, the experience is worth as much or more than the 4 year degree, and you can always go back and finish that BS or even masters when you have stable employment and lifestyle.
Overall, from the people I know that work at EA and others that have the "game design" degrees and such, it's an office job... you sit and grind out content much like an accountant sits and goes over financial records.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

Personally, I got a job at a small business after receiving my 2-Year Associates Degree in programming as the "computer guy". Basically doing all the tech support, networking, and development of the website and any internal tools. It might not be as glamorous as getting a 4-Year Bachelors Degree and coming out of college working at a large corporation, but after 5 years employers see that on my resume and don't question my education.MagicManICT wrote: No. You can learn in under a year the programming techniques that are taught in a four year BS program. It's really nice not having student loans, let me tell you. I saved at least $50k by not attending my last 2 years at a University. The job at the small business paid pretty well too all things considered. $60k in the midwest USA. I don't feel disadvantaged either since I get just as many job offers.
If an employer wanted me to finish up my degree and compensate me for it, I'd do it, but I don't think I'd spend the $40k for 2 years at a University. I'd rather invest it in something else.

In Finland, you can get loan guaranted/backed by the government. If you graduate early, they pay like 20% of it off. Its basically free money with next to no interest, and even if you would not find job and are unable to pay it back, it would not matter that much because its guaranteed by state. Most people just take and invest it, because they get enough income transfers from the government to live poor student life without any loans.

The USA has some of the best public universities in the world. Sure, they're not free without a scholarship, but our income tax is also "only" 25% for the middle class. My point was that gaming degrees are a joke. You sacrifice too much programming learning for "game design" and art classes.sMartins wrote:Usa? The University of Michigan is the closest University to me and is ranked 21st in the world. It costs $14,826/semester to attend. Is that a lot? Yes. Does our government back loans with 0-interest while you attend school? Also yes.
The reason our education prices have skyrocketed is because our culture shifted to telling our kids they must get a 4-year college degree and since nearly anyone can get a loan, these 18 year olds will sign their lives away without any understanding of finances, credit, interest, etc. We also have great 2-Year programs in the USA for Associate or technical degrees that cost next to nothing, but our culture looks down on them. People like Mike Rowe are slowly fixing that, but we're still in a student loan bubble now.

Its crazy to think that you would have to pay for studying.Zampfeo wrote:The USA has some of the best public universities in the world. In Finland you pay once like 100€, then you can study for free, and with that price you get stuff lot of benefits, like some healthcare stuff. Of course you have to buy food and stuff like that by yourself, but you get some money from the government to do that. Education quality is good also. Who really cares about rankings. For most people it does not matter.
University rankings are just one way more to fool brainwashed american capitalists to think that it is right to ask more money for education.
and 0% for the higher class.but our income tax is also "only" 25% for the middle class.
I hope you dont think that either of them is a good thing.
