You can't cast into the tiles right next to shore, though, which makes it impossible to fish in most of the river shallows. Find a lake instead, or a bend in the river that has shallows extending two tiles away from the shore.

That's a huge help. My problem was that I couldn't fish in the tiles right next to the shore. Finding a good spot on a river looks like it's going to be tricky. Thanks for the tip!!

Hm. It seems that the quality of fishing pole components affects not only what you can catch, but also what you CAN'T catch.
For example, with 10/fibre10/bone23 fishing pole i get only perch everywhere. But with 10/fibre10/bone10 i get mostly brill.
It would be nice if someone else tested this.
