They translated all of that in actual concepts and ideas we can operate with ... we could say, they invented our mind as we know it today.
That's why it's said that Greeks are the fathers of everything we know in the west.

Yeah, except I never claimed that there was no learning in Ancient Greece, because that would be dumb. It was you who spouted humanist historiography, and claimed that the so called dark ages were just as dark as Petrarch, Voltaire, Diederot, and the rest of the jolly crew, would have you believe.Potjeh wrote:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gymnasium ... nt_Greece)

What? I pointed out precisely that you were quoting Paul out of context.Jalpha wrote:Firstly I will quote the book itself instead of whichever priest has filled your mind with their own interpretation. You are adding a lot of words which aren't there. I quoted out of context. Honestly I was surprised you skipped over this and immediately began quoting your priests.jorb wrote:The quote from Paul is advocating sacred virginity, and if you feel you can walk that path then you are certainly a better man than I. Paul is, however, not suggesting that a life of unmarried fornication -- which is usually the alternative -- is better than marriage.
The words of Jesus trump those of Paul I am not sorry to say.
There is no contradiction between what Paul says and what Jesus says.

Re: Human Population Through Time
You applied a context which is missing from scripture. Paul could have just said "Remain virgins and abstain from all sexual relations." but he didn't. He made a statement with much room for interpretation. You spoke the words of priests and their interpretation of scripture. I think this is a classic case of Paul "towing the line" and making a statement to fit the times.
The statements made by Jesus and Paul are what they are. One gives advice on entering the kingdom of god, the other is an expression of how one particular individual has lived his life.

Sumarians, Egyptians pushed the bounds of mathematical understand more than the Greeks ever did. All we know the Greeks for is the Pythagorean Theorem and Euclidean Geometry. Even the Arabs created as much importance with the explicity representation of "0," without which modern math doesn't work... or anything more than addition and subtraction.sMartins wrote:Math, physics, astro-physics
The Greeks formalized the rules for these, and gave us the Hippocratic Oath, but to say created by?medicine, phylosophy
So paintings on a cave wall of a successful hunt isn't art? Fine art was created well before even the written language. There are glyphs carved into rock dating back 10s of thousands of years in the Painted Desert in Arizona.arts
I do believe that is a quote from King Solomon... something like "There's nothing new under the sun," or something like that. I was never very good at memorizing my Bible verses, and not going to bother taking the 30s to look it up through Google. We do not have anything new that uses a brand new way of thinking ... I guess it will happen soon or later.

Re: Human Population Through Time
Arabs studied Greeks like we did, tragedy and epic poems are not the same than paintings on the cave wall, etc.. etc.. ... btw it's not that the point.
I already explained why, Greeks inveted rationality, the world of ideas ... if we are in a room, 5 people, and we have to decide what's the temperature, we will have 5 results, as many as our bodies ( one can say it's warm for him, another one is cold, etc..).... but Greeks said, wait we can give an idea for the temperature, that's the same for everyone, we can choose a reference and then scale that value. It's trivial for us today, but that's how great Greeks were.
EDIT: Eratostene after a couple of centuries calculated the radius of the earth with extreme accuracy .... that's how precise they were, just with concepts and ideas, that's all we need. The most clever civilization we ever had, at least in the west.

It is not difficult if one understands the concept of a ball/circle and some properties of it.sMartins wrote:Eratostene after a couple of centuries calculated the radius of the earth with extreme accuracy .... that's how precise they were.

Do the same with dark matter or black holes, and we will be thankfull to you also.shubla wrote:It is not difficult if one understands the concept of a ball/circle and some properties of it.sMartins wrote:Eratostene after a couple of centuries calculated the radius of the earth with extreme accuracy .... that's how precise they were.
P.S. Also, if that doesn't look difficult to you today, it's why we need to be thankfull to Greeks.
EDIT:
And, expanding on this topic, Greeks knew very well that the idea of Temperature is not the same thing of the real temperature we feel, but just a trick that works for us = technique, far weaker than the nature.
And since then we all are doing like Greeks, we have ideas to understand and to communicate in a more meaningful way.
And we, today, are so dumb that we cannot even see how ideas of reality are not the reality itself. Greeks knew that very well, they inveted it.
