It's not a production system. It's an unstable testing system. Otherwise you'd be correct.
Not true. They are running a business, accepting payment for services. It is a production system. This is their business.

Consider this "Early Access" then. It's a test system. it's prone to breaking and other problems. We just had all of our data deleted because of an intrinsic flaw in a core mechanic.

Thank God the server crashed, otherwise I would've been stuck playing for even longer.
I totally forgot how addicting this game is, didn't even notice that 12 hours had passed already since I started playing.

In my opinion, they accept donations, but not payment for services. And, in any case: http://www.havenandhearth.com/portal/about
Current Status

Haven and Hearth is currently in what we consider alpha status. In practice, this means that we have most of the core functionalities in place, those crucial gimmicks and widgets that allow the game to run and people to connect and play. However, much of the higher-level functionality is either missing or only partially implemented. Also, because some functionality is partially implemented, the persistent data in the game can be rather unstable. For example, we might have to remove the maps from time to time when we implement a new map generator.

he could be working diligently on the problem. Don't bother him so we can get the server back sooner. (or maybe he's solving the problem by osmosis and sleeping on it? )

You and Magic both seem to be missing the point. Regardless of alpha or beta or gold status, the deployment environment is consumer exposed. That makes it production (versus test, which in this case, I presume, is no more than Loftar's own computer). Because it is also their source of income, and their business (not donations btw), running that production environment comes with all the gotcha's of running any business--specifically here availability, which is paramount for any web business. It is in their own best interest to pick the low-hanging fruit in achieving it.

edit: we don't actually have any transparency into what is happening on their end, so I don't want it to sound like I'm grilling them. I'm not. They may well be working on the issue as you would expect in any production environment.
