So the problem is that it doesn't have enough network bandwidth and not the server itself?
How much bandwidth does the server have? Just out of curiosity.

To be honest, I'm not sure exactly where the problem lies. To begin with, Hetzner has some automatic DDoS protection that does in fact kick in a minute or so into each attack, significiantly reducing the traffic, and at that point the remaining traffic arriving at the server is below the link bandwidth (which is 1 Gbps). The traffic arriving at the server seems to hover around 100-200 Mbps at that point. I'm not entirely sure if the remaining problems at that point are caused by network congestion in the part of Hetzner's network that is in front of the DDoS protection, or if it's something related to how the game server handles its network buffering (there could be local queues overflowing before the server gets to handle it). I'm still investigating that.

If that were the case, I can 100% guarantee you'd see the siegers complaining about it.

I think you should make a special 'Defender' hat that we can buy to help defray the cost of putting the servers behind some virtual servers

The problem with that isn't the monetary cost, but the development time.

It's fine, we can live without another bird update :)
(just joking though, I appreciate the effort you're putting in the game. The fact that you have to fight off your own players is just BS)

Money can save you time from other chores, at least until certain point. And this time can be used for development!

I think that it has been pretty much nonstop?
But for some reason server has issues only occasionally.
Its probably not going to stop anytime soon, it may very well be that devs have to come up with something, not just for this attack, but in case of future too (even if this one would just stop by itself)

No, there have been roughly two attacks per day, lasting 2-4 hours each. But yes, it is currently going again.
